Mangaluru: Five sentenced to life imprisonment for 2015 Madoor Yusuf prison murder

Mangaluru, Oct 2: The Second Additional District and Sessions Court here on Thursday, October 1, sentenced five accused to life imprisonment in connection with the 2015 murder of Madoor Yusuf inside the Mangaluru district prison.

The brutal murder of Madoor Yusuf took place inside the Mangaluru prison, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Barke police station, on November 2, 2015.

The convicted individuals have been identified as Lithesh Poojary alias Lithu from Surathkal, Shobharaj alias Shobhi from Surathkal, Yuvaraj from Surathkal, Pradeep from Ulaibettu, and Umesh Kombar alias Umesh Kumbara from Sullia.

Judge Jagadeesh V N, who concluded the trial, pronounced the verdict on Thursday. Along with the life sentence, the court also slapped a fine of Rs 76,000 on the five convicts.

Special public prosecutor B Mohan Kumar argued the case on behalf of the state. The then assistant commissioner of police (ACP) of the Mangaluru central sub-division, Tilak Chandra, had conducted a thorough investigation into the incident and submitted the chargesheet to the court.

A case regarding the incident was registered at the Barke police station (Crime No 92/2015) under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 143, 144, 147, 148, 324, 326, 353, 332, 307, 302 (murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and 37 read with section 149.
