Vasco, Oct 3: Two persons were killed after their motorcycle crashed into the crash barrier of the Baina flyover and they were thrown onto the road below on Thursday night.

The deceased have been identified as Shrishail Rayappa Talwar (29), a resident of Mangor-Vasco, and Survana Chandrashekar Koppar (25), of Baina-Vasco.

According to the enquiry report, Talwar was riding a Bajaj Pulsar with Koppar as pillion when the accident occurred at around 9.45 pm near a sharp curve on the flyover. They were travelling from Mormugao Port Authority Gate No. 9 towards the T-junction when the motorcycle reportedly went out of control and crashed into the crash barrier.

The impact threw both occupants over the barrier and onto the road below, while the motorcycle remained on the flyover.

The sound of the crash drew residents and passers-by to the spot, where they found the two injured on the road. Emergency services were alerted and the victims were shifted to the Sub-District Hospital at Chicalim.

Sources said Koppar died on the spot, while Talwar was subsequently shifted to the hospital. Both, however, succumbed to their grievous injuries.

The accident could have resulted in further casualties had another vehicle been passing along the road below. Fortunately, no vehicle or person was present on the stretch directly below when the two fell from the flyover.

Eyewitnesses said the motorcycle appeared to have been travelling at high speed. However, Vasco police are investigating the precise sequence of events and the circumstances that caused the rider to lose control near the sharp curve.
