Viral video of woman in apparent intoxicated state sparks Punjab drug debate

Chandigarh, Oct 3: A video showing a 19-year-old woman in an apparent intoxicated condition in Bathinda has gone viral on social media, prompting political reactions and renewed concerns over drug abuse in Punjab.

The video, reportedly recorded in the Grain Market area of Bathinda, shows the woman struggling to stand and walk. She appears to lose her balance and fall to the ground before a passerby helps her get back on her feet.

The circumstances surrounding the woman's condition, including what substance, if any, she may have consumed and how she reached Bathinda, have not yet been ascertained.

Former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal shared the video on X and criticised the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government over the state's drug problem.

Badal referred to the alleged use of “zombie” drugs, saying such substances can cause severe cognitive and physical impairment. However, there is no official confirmation that the woman in the video had consumed any particular drug.

“Our daughters are Punjab's future, strength and pride. If they are not safe from the drug menace, how will we secure Punjab's future?” Badal said.

Reacting to the visuals, Badal described the incident as a “horrifying reminder” of the extent of the drug problem in Punjab. He also accused the state government of failing to protect young people despite its anti-drug campaign.

“Punjab needs freedom from drugs, not a government high on its own publicity,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bathinda Police said it had taken cognisance of the viral video showing the woman in an apparently intoxicated condition in an area under the Kotwali Bathinda police station.

According to a post by the police on X, a PCR team immediately reached the spot, safely rescued the woman and shifted her to Civil Hospital, Bathinda, for medical attention.

During verification, police found that the woman is a resident of Jaito in Faridkot district. Her family members were informed and called to the hospital, police said.

“Further necessary legal action is being taken in the matter,” Bathinda Police said.
