Puttur: Man who fled court during 2016 murder case hearing gets two-year jail term

Puttur, Oct 5: A man who allegedly made a dramatic bid to flee while proceedings were under way at a Puttur court in 2016 has been sentenced to two years’ simple imprisonment by the principal senior civil judge and ACJM court, Puttur.

The convict has been identified as Jayesh alias Jayeshkanth S, Shahir alias Shakir (41), a resident of Siri Bagilu, Puttur.

The incident occurred on April 5, 2016, when Jayesh, an accused in Uppinangady police station Crime No. 120/2008, was brought from Mangaluru prison to the 5th additional district and sessions court, Puttur, for the hearing of the case.

The original case was registered under Sections 450, 302 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

While the court proceedings were in progress, the accused allegedly made a sudden attempt to escape and fled from the court. Puttur Town police subsequently registered Crime No. 91/2016 under Section 224 of the IPC in connection with the incident.

After hearing the case, principal senior civil judge and ACJM Prakruthi Kalyanapur sentenced the accused to two years’ simple imprisonment on October 5, 2026.

Then Puttur Town police sub-inspector Khader, who investigated the case, had filed the charge sheet before the court. Public prosecutor Manoj Kumar represented the prosecution and effectively argued the case, police said.
