Puttur, Oct 6: The body of a man who had gone missing after leaving his bike and mobile phone on the old bridge over the Kumaradhara River in Uppinangady three days ago was found in the Netravati river at Bollara in 34 Nekkilady village on Monday October 5.

The deceased has been identified as Madhava Gowda (44), a resident of Perabe in Hirebandady village. He is suspected to have died by suicide after jumping into the river.

Madhava, who had recently started a tyre puncture repair shop at Athoor, left home for his shop on October 2 but did not return. His bike and mobile phone were found on the old bridge over the Kumaradhara River in Uppinangady. Suspecting that he may have jumped into the river, a fire service team and divers conducted a search at the confluence of the Kumaradhara and Netravati rivers on October 4, but could not trace him.

On October 5, local residents spotted a body in the river at Bollara. Upon examination, it was identified as that of Madhava Gowda.

According to his family, Madhava had been suffering from depression for around 14 years and was also addicted to alcohol. About four months ago, he had undergone treatment at a hospital in Puttur to overcome his alcohol addiction. However, his family members said he had resumed drinking three days before he went missing.

Madhava is survived by his wife and two daughters. A case has been registered at the Uppinangady police station in connection with the incident.
