Ranchi, Oct 9: India opener Abhishek Sharma will have a chance to achieve a major milestone in his T20 International career when India take on the West Indies in the second T20I on Friday. He needs 53 more runs to complete 2,000 T20I runs and could also break a world record held by Suryakumar Yadav.

Suryakumar holds the record for reaching 2,000 T20I runs in the fewest balls, having achieved the feat in 1,164 deliveries. Australia’s Aaron Finch is second on the list, having taken 1,283 balls.

Abhishek has scored 1,947 runs off 997 balls. He needs to reach the 2,000-run mark within his next 166 deliveries to break Suryakumar’s record, meaning he must score the required 53 runs in 166 balls or fewer.

The left-hander has established himself as an aggressive batter in the shortest format, boasting a career T20I strike rate of 195.29. He has hit 135 sixes and scored three centuries in the format.

Earlier this year, Abhishek smashed a century in just 30 balls against Afghanistan, recording the fastest T20I century by an Indian.

Abhishek scored 21 off 10 balls in the series opener against the West Indies in Lucknow before being dismissed by Roston Chase. India won the match by eight wickets, with Shreyas Iyer scoring an unbeaten 102 off 43 balls to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

With Ranchi hosting the second T20I, Abhishek will look to deliver another explosive performance and potentially surpass his former captain’s record.
