Barbie to go Bald

London, Apr 1 (IANS): The popular Barbie doll is all set to get a bald makeover in support of children who lose their hair due to cancer treatment.

Toymaker Mattel took the decision after a campaign attracted more than 150,000 "likes" on social network Facebook, Sky News reported.

Mattel spokesman Alan Hilowitz confirmed that the doll would be put into production, complete with wigs, hats, scarves and additional accessories. It would, however, be classified as a "friend" of Barbie.

The "bald and beautiful" campaign was started on Facebook in January by two women whose daughters lost their hair after undergoing treatment for cancer.

Campaign co-founder Jane Bingham came up with the idea to help young children, after meeting Rebecca Sypin, another mother in a similar situation.

Mattel said the dolls would not be sold in stores but donated to hospitals.

"Through a thoughtful approach, we made the decision not to sell these dolls at retail stores, but rather get the dolls directly into the hands of children who can most benefit from the unique play experience," the company said in a statement.
