Israeli drone strike wounds six in Lebanon near Syrian border

Beirut, Oct 10: An Israeli drone strike targeting a car in Lebanon’s Hermel district near the Syrian border wounded six people, including five Syrian nationals, the Lebanese health ministry said on Friday.

The ministry said the injured included two Syrian women and one Lebanese national. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that the drone attack targeted a car in the area, which has largely been spared such strikes since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was agreed in June.

Israel’s military said it had struck “a Syrian terrorist” who allegedly operated under the direction of the Iranian regime and planned and advanced attacks against Israeli forces in southern Syria.

Israel has continued military operations in both Syria and Lebanon despite the ceasefire with Hezbollah. It has also vowed to maintain troops in what it describes as security zones along its borders with the two countries.

Since the ouster of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria. It has also deployed troops into a United Nations-patrolled buffer zone that has separated Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan Heights since 1974, while conducting repeated incursions deeper into Syrian territory. Some operations have involved the seizure of local residents, according to reports.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa criticised Israeli actions during his address to the United Nations General Assembly last month, warning that the attacks threatened the country's fragile post-war recovery.

“We reject Israeli attempts to impose a fait accompli. We reject their aggressions, which undermine peace and security,” al-Sharaa said.

He claimed Israel had carried out 500 air strikes, more than 1,200 incursions and 300 detentions in Syria. He also called for Israeli forces to withdraw from Syrian territory and urged the international community to uphold the 1974 agreement establishing a UN-supervised separation zone between Israeli and Syrian forces.
