Mangaluru, Oct 10: Dr H R Mahadevaswamy, former vice chancellor of JSS University, Noida, inaugurated the Sahyadri AICTE IDEA Lab at Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru, on Friday, October 9.
The IDEA (Idea, Development, Evaluation and Application) scheme of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) provides students and faculty a common platform to turn an idea into a working prototype under one roof.
The Lab has a built-up area of 3,817 sq ft and the project cost of Rs 90 lac. Its facilities include a 3D printer and 3D scanner, a CNC router, a vinyl cutter, multipurpose lathe and milling machines, drilling and welding machines, soldering stations, digital microscopes and oscilloscopes.





In the inaugural address, Dr Mahadevaswamy spoke on innovation, intellectual property rights (IPR) and the scope of entrepreneurship in the country.
Dr S S Injaganeri, principal, delivered the welcome address. Dr Ajith B S, coordinator, presented an overview of the Lab and introduced the chief guest. Dr S Manjappa, director (R&D), highlighted the scope and objectives of the AICTE IDEA Lab, the role of sponsoring agencies, and the developmental initiatives undertaken at Sahyadri that have led to various institutional recognitions.
He emphasised how these initiatives benefit all stakeholders and contribute to delivering quality education. Krishna Hegde, administrator, also addressed the students, emphasising the importance of developing practical problem-solving skills through hands-on learning and application-oriented practices. Dr Duddela Sai Prashanth, co-coordinator, proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Dr Aysha Shabana.
Over the next two years, it is planned to organise faculty development programmes, student skilling programmes, ideation workshops and internships. It will also run outreach programme for industry, school teachers and school students, and will join AICTE's national network family of IDEA Labs. The students and faculty of Sahyadri and all the Institutions of coastal region can use of the facility.
