Mangalore: Radical Surgery Cures Patient of Advanced Cancer

Media Release

Mangalore, Apr 2:
A 45-year-old lady who was diagnosed with cancer five years earlier, which had spread to the liver and was being treated with chemotherapy, has been successfully cured of cancer by radical surgery performed at Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Kodialbail here.

The patient, a mother of two children, was suffering from Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour of the stomach. She was started on chemotherapy five years earlier and despite chemotherapy, the tumour progressively increased in size and also spread to the liver. Her tumour was deemed inoperable by cancer specialists in Mangalore and Bangalore.

She was then referred to Dr Vijay Ramachandran, Surgical Gastroenterologist and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon at Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Kodialbail. Dr Vijay evaluated her and suggested that she undergo radical surgery owing to non-response to chemotherapy.

In a surgical procedure which lasted four hours, the patient underwent successful resection of the cancerous tumour (weighing nearly 3 kg) and the part of the liver afflicted by the tumour. The patient made a smooth recovery and was discharged subsequently. Dr Vijay stated that the duration of the disease or involvement of the liver alone does not indicate unresectability. Surgical expertise can make all the difference between inoperability and cure in many seemingly hopeless situations.
