100 Held in China for Reprocessing Waste Oil

Beijing, Apr 3 (IANS): Over 100 people have been arrested in China for reprocessing waste oil from restaurants and then selling them as new cooking oil, police said.

Dumped animal fat was reprocessed into edible oil, Xinhua cited a statement from the ministry of public security as saying.

A special police operation has shut down 13 workshops and seized 3,200 tonnes of such oil.

The China Central Television (CCTV) said the animal fat was from slaughter houses, and included rotten meat and animal viscera.

The ministry pledged to enhance efforts in safeguarding food safety.

Several food safety scandals surfaced in 2011, including a cancer-causing chemical clenbuterol being added to pig feed to produce lean meat.
