Strong Quake Jolts Mexico

Mexico City, Apr 3 (IANS): A magnitude-6.3 earthquake jolted Mexico Monday, prompting evacuation of buildings in the capital.

The quake struck just before 1 p.m., and shook buildings in Mexico City for several seconds and sent residents fleeing to the streets.

Some residents told Xinhua that lights flickered and furniture shook in their homes.

The US Geological Survey measured the quake at 6.3 on the Richter scale. The epicenter, with a depth of 12.3 km, was located 27 km southeast of Ometepec in Guerrero state.

Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard wrote on Twitter that an inspection via helicopter over the city showed "no major damages".

The subway was functioning normally, but there were evacuation of buildings and scenes of distress, the mayor said.

However, Mexico's National Seismological Service put the tremor at 6.0 magnitude.
