Udupi: Corrupt Surveyor Jailed for a Year in Bribery Case

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi

Udupi, Apr 3: Surveyor Prakash S Gavare has been sentenced to one year in jail on charges of taking bribe in a case relating to error in land survey number.

The verdict was passed by the Udupi district sessions court on Monday April 2. He was also ordered to pay Rs 2,000 as penalty.

When Ram Devadiga, a resident of Byndoor, obtained land sketches and boundary markings of his 4.49-acre land after conducting a survey, he found errors in the survey number, for which he filed an application in Byndoor tahsildar office in order to get it corrected.

Tashildar office surveyor, Prakash Gavare, demanded Rs 2000 in order to provide the sketch of the land. Devadiga lodged a complaint against him with Udupi Lokayukta police.

Police registered a case and began investigations. On Febraury 24, 2009 a trap was laid and the official was arrested soon after he took the bribe money. The police also seized the bribe money.

Lokayukta police inspector B P Dinesh Kumar submitted chargesheet in Udupi district sessions court regarding the case. Judge Narendra Kumar Gunika of the district sessions court sentenced Gavare to one year in jail and ordered him to pay a penalty of Rs 2000.

Prakash was working as surveyor in Brahmavar.

I am surprised that Surveyor Prakash S. Gavare was only given one month jail sentence and a fine of Rs.2000/only. It is good for him but not good for the society. He must have minted in thousands and thousands of rupees in his career. He will serve his sentence and go on with his business. This is corruption in this country going on .day by day.

2009 case judgement is favored NOW!!?? Rs.2000 bribe case took 2 years, how about Multi crores scandals?? It will take centuries and case would dismissed. This idiot should have been suspended from job for life with at least 5 years imprisonment. Tough punishment wipe out corruption. Only LOKPAL is the remedy for this.

good justice. atleast some one initiated to punish and it is appreciated. If this kind of justice continous, hope ther will be fear in all officials to ask for bribe. Lets start from the bottom, so that higher officer will not get dare to ask for bribe.

Thanks to Daijiworld for this article. This even experienced by me. Just correction of Pahani (RTC)in which land area wrongly mentioned reducing 50 cents, We were made to wait for two years and finally got corrected. The authorities were expecting the bribe for which we have ignored. When we threatened to go with RTI channel work completed. If judiciary works fast like this every one can fight

I agree with you - fast justice for small or big offence - then only the fear of the law will be instilled in all those who break the law. All this time to be sentenced for any crime it used to take years
Ahmed, Mangalore - I feel this is a good thing that happened - small cases taken up - punished without much delay, if found guilty and move up in the days to come for cases of higher magnitude - and reach the 2000 crore Ghotala as u mentioned - I think it will reach there shortly (this is also for the comments of John, Mumbai, USA
I think citizens' comments are noticed and slowly actions are being taken - hope BJP/UPA donot interfere in these things to save their cronies - both are such enormously adored saints!!!!
Kudos to the authorities for their quich action

It is not the corrupt surveyor,it is the corrupt system what we follow day by day.Blaming one person or jailing one it is not the immediate solution what we expect,a strong team of Lokayukta with frequent visiting of Govt offices, will sure reduce the corruption to a level that what we belive. The corrupt officers should be removed from thier post without any delay, a clear warnining to others, not to follow the way of corruption .

    Good News!!!
This has to be published in all Coastal Daily Paper's as a Headline News. For these type of cases the judgement has to be given in a month or two. The penalty charged is very nominal. It has to be at least 10 times the amount he claimed.
At the same one has to note that, there are agents who charge heavily for the jobs to be done. Better to keep an eye on them too.
