Maid Torture: Doctor Couple Arrested in Delhi

New Delhi, Apr 4 (IANS): A doctor and his wife who flew to Thailand for a vacation last month after allegedly locking up a 13-year-old maid in their house with very little food were arrested here Wednesday afternoon, police said.

"The couple was arrested today (Wednesday) from Rajouri Garden (west Delhi) at around 1.30 p.m. and have been produced before a court in Dwarka," a senior police officer said.

A Delhi court had Tuesday dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of the couple - Sanjay Verma and his wife Sumita - who had locked their minor help and left for Thailand March 25 with very little food.

The maid was rescued March 30 after neighbours heard her screams.

A first information report had been filed report against the couple under the Juvenile Justice Act, Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, Child Labour Prohibition and Regulation Act and the Indian Penal Code.

The couple faces charges of employing a 13-year old and physically and mentally torturing her.

    These educated two-legged wild
animals must be put into jail for
a few years-feed them the same food
    given by the hard-core criminals.
Let them treat the sick criminals
in the jail. Indian laws are not
hard enough to scare these high
    society criminals in doing evil
    things like this. Reading such
    news is indeed heart-breaking
    and causing tears.
