Economist Kelkar to Meet Vidarbha Farmers

Nagpur, Apr 5 (IANS): Economist Vijay Kelkar will Friday visit Yavatmal in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and speak to farmers and widows of debt-burdened peasants for a review on the imbalance of progress, an activist said here Thursday.

"As a single man committee, Kelkar will speak and interact with farmers and farm widows of the region in Yavatmal town and look into the last 52 years of imbalance of progress and regional backlog resulting in mass genocide of Vidarbha dry land farmers," said Kishor Tiwari, president of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), an group working for cotton farmers.

"Kelkar is visiting Yavatmal to gather details on a special report he is working on regarding the ongoing agrarian crisis that has claimed more than 10,000 cotton farmers' lives. The report will then be submitted to the governor of Maharashtra," Tiwari added.

Tiwari expressed concern over such visits and the subsequent inaction on part of the state and central governments.

He hoped that Kelkar, who hails from Akola in Maharashtra, will be aware of the ground reality.

"We will demand a separate state of Vidarbha as that is the only option left in order to save three million debt-trapped cotton farmers or the region where one peasant is committing suicide every eight hours," Tiwari said.

On March 2, a 37-member parliamentary standing committee headed by Basudeb Acharia visited the Vidarbha region over farmers' suicides.

As many as 918 peasants from the region ended their lives in 2011 because of the agrarian crisis.

    Respected sir
Recently you visited to yavatmal on economical survey of yavatmal but not satisfied on your discussion sir,Yavatmal district is a tribal district ,millions of people living in this area are S.C.,S.T., Banjara, morethan 60% population of these community it is the need to think about the upliftment of these communities.most of the people of these commuities are very poor and facing financial problems.hence due to attack of poor economy on them they decided about the suicide.i am praying you that irrigation or construction of dam is not most problems of this district because our cotton is depend upon on rainy season, our need to development of agrobase processing unit at taluka level.i am in favour of you because your committee has recomanded the topics of taluka level developement this is good idea but ,what facilities require for it this also the main issue for the development of this district.we need cotton processing unit at taluka level,we need agroproduct marketing unit,we need water conservation facility at village level.water absorption program needed at each village level that grant should directly carry on by farmer,

There is no need of any contracter or engineer, grant should receive directly in the account of farmer.sothat the money will be used by farmer and they will carry the activities of themself. appointment of NGO only needed only for servey and awareness only not big budget should provided to any goverment agency or any NGO.it will help for economical development of farmer.there is no need to carry high level water conservation project. such big project only carry the corruption. not directly benefitted for farmer and farm worker.this big project time consuming and money consuming.merge your money for direct benefit to land and farmer.therefore i am again you request that kindly do recomand such poverty elimination program.also i am requesting you that please the various contractual post through reservation that helps to prevent suicide.
