Sullia: Heavy Rains, Strong Wind – Woman Dies of Lightning

Mangalore, Apr 9: Various parts of the district, particularly from Sullia taluk, were battered by heavy rain, strong wind, and lightning, on Sunday April 8. A woman lost life due to lightning, accounting for the first victim to the lightning this year in the district.

Girija (35), wife of Babu from Kukkujadka Colony near Chokkady in Sullia taluk lost her life after lightning struck here. She was grinding some items on Sunday evening, when the lightning, which struck a nearby tree, flowed through the electrical wiring, before hitting Girija, who died on the spot. Other family members survived miraculously, as they were some distance away at the time.



Golitottu, Ichalampady, Shiradi and Bajettur in Puttur taluk, and some places in Beltangady taluk too reported heavy rains. Uppinangady and surrounding areas received moderate rain.

Lightning on Sunday evening caused disruption of power supply to many houses in and around Subrahmanya, besides inflicting damages to electrical appliances of several families. Fallen trees also resulted in severing of power supply to some areas and damages to houses and other structures at different places. Traffic was also affected at a number of places due to fallen trees.

Several parts of Shimoga and Chikmagalur districts also received good rain on Sunday coupled with lightning and thunder on Sunday afternoon.

    Sorry to hear that Babu lost his wife Girija at this young age due to lightning. May her soul rest in eternal peace and give comfort to her husband and other family members. During this monsoon season many lives are lost and heavy property damage where no one can control.

    Where does this rain water from Puttur, Sullia and Uppinangady flow to. This should solve the drinking water problems of Mangalore.
