China Expands its Oldest N-plant

Beijing, Apr 9 (IANS): China has completed the expansion of its first nuclear power plant in Qinshan that will now help generate about 34 billion kwh of electricity annually.

A new reactor with a 650,000-kw capacity has been installed at Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in eastern Zhejiang province.

The expansion project that started in 2006 envisaged installing two reactors. The first one of the two with same capacity was installed in 2010. The number of generator units in Qinshan now rises to seven, China Daily reported Sunday.

The plant started operation in December 1991.

The units are designed, built and operated by Chinese companies, said Chen Hua, assistant general manager at China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).
