Kundapur: Consumption of Toxic Waste - Over 50 Cattle Die

Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, Apr 13: Coming in a series of death of cattle after consuming poisonous substances, expired medicines, and refuse of slaughter houses being abandoned in an open area at Ottinene within Paduvari gram panchayat near Byndoor, over 25 cattle died on Thursday April 12. With this, the waste dump here has accounted for over 50 lives of cattle.

The villagers of nearby places like Paduvari and Henberu say their cattle, which graze at Ottinene, have been suddenly collapsing and breathing their last in their cattle sheds since the last several weeks. Just before their deaths, the stomachs of these cattle are bloated, and animated concussion of their feet is observed. Blood oozes out of their eyelids, mouths, and noses.  These families, which mainly depend upon income derived from dairying, have become listless and agitated at this sudden turn of events.

A team of veterinary officers from Byndoor, after noticing the phenomenon, has camped in the area. However, they have not been able to save the lives of these cattle. They are also busy in conducting post mortems. One of the veterinary officers, Nagaraj, told the media persons that most of the cattle died after eating poisonous waste. He felt they would have been able to save the lives of at least some of the cattle, if the health problem was diagnosed in early stages. Another veterinary officer, Manjunath, said that tests would be conducted to find out whether these deaths were caused by expired medicines found at Ottinene or otherwise.

The haunted spot where the vast heap of waste is found is located by the side of national highway 66. In addition to various vehicles passing through the highway which dump carcasses of dead animals and waste from slaughter houses, even hotels, shops, salons etc from Byndoor and Shiroor dispose off their waste here. The place reeks, and out of date items and expired medicines that are discharged here, have been adding to the woes of the people.

On Thursday, bodies of over 15 cows and about 10 carcasses of pigs disposed of by passing vehicles at Ottinene, were buried.

The people who dumped this toxic waste, expired medicines and refuse of slaughter house should be first dumped in the same garbage and find out what happens to them. These guys are cruel and have no respect for anybody. More than 50 cattle were killed by their negligence and who is going to bare the loss of these animals. The concerned authorities please clean up the place with the toxic waste before more cattle are killed.

I think Bajrangdal folks must engage in activities such as cleaning garbage & waste disposal sites instead of chasing down vehichles carrying cattle...and leading to more cattle death! If the Corporation can provide people with designated sites for disposal of toxic waste , carcas etc, such incidents can surely be minimised. When will people wake up to civic sense??!!!! God please help us!

' Our Gods fed With Garbage '. Many people in the state are talking about the 'Holy Cow '. yes, we should totally agree and if a child looses his/her mother its the Cow that replaces it and the child grows feeding on the cows milk .

But my only question is why is that the people who are talking about Cows protection are feeding our Cow Gods with Garbage. In India , Cows , Goats , Pigs and Poultry are mainly feeding on garbage and drainage waste . The same is sold in Fresh meat counters .Fish is also not spared as it is just thrown on the ground for auction where people spit their sprutum. If people see the way Fish is handled in coastal area they will stop eating .Yak...

In the absence of any solid sewerage or garbage collection system in DK people are forced to mark some place as garbage dumps where all types of waste including hospital, hotel, poultry, caracasses are dumped! These types of mounds can be seen in different places. We are waiting to get this sad incident repeated again unless concrete steps are not taken for garbage clearance!! Lekhin this is Kar-Nataka!!!

We can easily avoid these happenings by properly disposing of wastes. This is the result of improper waste disposal facility at rural areas. The used platics, empty/half empty bottles of chemicals, pestisides, drugs are simply thrown at open land, rivers and channels resulting in pollution of water, soil and immediate loss of animals and plants. Panchayats has to initiate the plan for waste bins and collection and strict action against waste disposal at open areas. There should be zero tolerence for not using the availabe waste disposal facility.
