Bangalore: KSRTC Volvo to Become Ultra Modern with Pantry, Toilet

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Apr 20: State home and transport minister, R Ashok, said that Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will be shortly introducing ultra modern Volvo buses, which will have facilities for breakfast, dining, toilet etc.

Ashok was speaking to media persons after unveiling the website of Sainik Welfare Department at Vidhan Soudha on Thursday April 19.

The minister added that these buses will start plying on the roads by next month. These buses will be introduced in long routes. Pantry space and toilets will be provided like in trains, he revealed. “Initially, KSRTC will introduce 25 such buses. The issue of adding to their fleet will be considered, after waiting for the customer response,” he said.

Ashok refused to field questions relating to the strike undertaken by KSRTC employees by way of suspending bus services since April 27, demanding wage revision. He said that the union government had levied a tax of ten crore rupees on KSRTC, relying on the fact that it is being run profitably. “We are approaching the centre with a request to waive this tax,” he informed.

He said city service buses will be introduced in Gulbarga and Hubli this year, and that KSRTC has decided to acquire 50 new sleeper buses this year.

It is a positive step as long as it is maintained and kept clean. In the UK the toilets are located at a lower level. So one has to go down a few steps to access the toilet. I am just addressing Mr Bhat's query.I am not sure what the minister meant by pantry. Some buses here in the UK do provide sandwiches and non alcoholic beverages but then the roads here are excellent .So vibration and jolting is less. Let us start one thing at a time.Toilet facilities are a necessity rather than a luxury.

These are definitely good, convenient and modern facilities esp. for the children/older generation.

As rightly said, roads are a big concern. Above all the ethicates I am worried about? Is it going to be Indian or western type? Further, please play a recorded video for the welfare of the general public on proper use of toilet facilities & public etIquettes, which we highly lack. Esp. the cleanliness.

The entry of Volvo has revolutionized long distance travel in India and most of the intercity operators are now adding Volvo's to their fleet! They have proven their mettle on the Indian roads! Addition of toilets will be a boon for the senior citizens and others like diabetics who get frequent urge to urinate! This facility will save a lot of time as otherwise the buses have to halt many times and waste time! And when Volvo is involved, it will doubly ensure that a rugged and hygienic mechanism is put in place lest it spoils their brand image!! So we should welcome this new service!!!

Congrats Walter. But the infrastructure in London and India are so different so as the system. Otherwise you would not have gone to UK to do your Masters and would have traveled our KSRTC. Can you imaging someone using toilet when the bus travelling in Augumbe or Shiradi Ghat???? this is India my friend, dont just compare. They need to provide the clean toilets first instead of toilets in the bus.

KSRTC has taken the right steps in offering bus service with toilets and pantry. This was a longstanding requirement of long distance intercity travelers. Since Volvo has revolutionized travel in India, I am sure this new facility will receive a overwhelming response from travelers. I have no doubts of this proving successful when Volvo is involved! I have traveled KSRTC Volvo numerous times and am proud to say their service is more professional and better than pvt. carriers. After Mercedes Benz, I read Scania too is to introduce intercity buses on par with Volvo soon. We the users will benefit from the competition!

KSRTC is surging ahead with modern facilities and technologies. We being kannadigas & being Indians don't we deserve such modernization? obviously, we deserve more. Being a Transport minister of the state, Mr. Ashoka can do much more than this for safer and better journey of commuters across the state. The least what he can do is, implement those existing traffic laws and regulations which are in general neglected by road users.

I agree with Latha. We are getting way ahead of ourselves. A third of the population in India does not have access to basic amenities. It is better to focus on providing a better standared of living for the masses. The toilets, if not used properly will only breed bacteria, which will lead to disease. I would refuse to travel on these buses. The toilets in the First/Business Class lounge in airports reek. I cannot imagine travelling in this confined space with a smelly toilet. Please give up this very, very ambitious move. Perhaps providing a clean airconditioned fleet & rest stops with refreshments and toilet facilities would be practical.

I fully agree with agree with Latha, USA comments eventhough many of the readers disagreed with her comments.

Being travelled in long distance buses in various (western, European & far east) countries I have not come across the bus with pantry.

When minister said "PANTRY" what does he mean? Minister says Pantry spaces like train for breakfast & dining. I have never seen dedicated dining space in train be it 2AC or sleeper. Or it is a foldable try table attached to front seat like in aircraft. With roas have numeros pit holes and buses bouncing every now and then is one can eat the food containting liquid (sambar, curry, curd)?

Regarding toilets it is great idea. Can we think of maintaining the higeine?

No doubt this idea is SUPERB!!! BUT HOW MUCH DOES THESE BUSES COST?

let us keep the fingers crossed and hope passengers will get good service.

I did my M.Tech at university of Newcastle way back in 1996.
I used to travel by the buses as described by Daiji. You will get Coffee, Hot chocolate and various types of sandwiches along the way.
The buses are all double deckers.
There was a toilet in the bus. The experience was exhilarating.
The bus would travel from London airport to Newcastle in 8 hours flat - a distance of 1000 Kms.
Why not have the same facility in Mangalore? Why so many objections and politics involved?
Why people are opposed to modernization?
Probably your kids know more than you as to how to use - Mobile, I Pad, I Phone, Modern LCD TV, watch porno on U tube etc.
    Have a good day.

You all will appreciate KSRTC is one of the best fleet owners and run efficiently and are making profit. This move of providing Pantry and Toilet facility will certainly a boon for the travellers. It would be appreciated if they consider providing medical assistance not in the bus itself but wherever it stops during the transit. It should be emergency service only thereby help the patients in case of urgency.

Let us hope that this introduction will certainly help travellers and also garner further travellers in its fold.

Its so sad that the Union Govt. is levying a 10 cr tax levy on the KSRTC, instead of appreciating the way the KSRTC is so successfully managing its services and guess the only Transport Corporation in the country earning profits....
My best wishes are with you as you approach the Center to waive this off.
Keep up the good work and as you are introducing mobile toilets etc. kindly ensure you have clean toilets at the bus stations/depots too.
This as somehow toilet maintenance and proper sanitation is just overlooked and such a disappointment during long trips.

No proper toilets for the poor people in the city and villages, but our govt wanted to have toilets inside the bus too for rich. Rich gets more and more facilities everywhere, but no one cares for poor because KSRTC or minister can't make money from poor Kannadiga's. Shame that we got independence to be ruled by corrupt politicians. I am sure the minister gets lots of bribe for placing 25 Volvo bus order. And also making foreign companies more rich by giving order to Volvo, which is anti Indian.
