Puttur: Tripped Gas Tanker Creates Traffic Chaos on NH

Puttur, Apr 22: A tanker carrying LPG to Bangalore from MRPL Mangalore fell by its side at the Addahole Double Turn on national highway (NH) 75 near Shiradi at around 8.30 am on Friday April 20, after the vehicle went out of control of the driver. The driver of the vehicle, Dhanraj, escaped with minor injuries, but the leaked LPG, although in small quantity, gave rise to panic in the region.

Policemen of Puttur traffic police station, who noticed the leakage of gas, conveyed the information to Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Mangalore. The technicians arrived at the spot along with spare tanker only at around 1 pm.

During this period, fire brigade personnel from Puttur and Mangalore continued to keep the fallen tanker cool by spraying water. The buses and other vehicles were asked to take a detour via Nelyady, Ichalampady and Charmadi.  The task of transferring LPG from the fallen tanker to four spare tankers could be completed only at dusk, after which normal traffic resumed on NH.

    We can read a lots of incidents propagating towards safety of public as well various assets. Mangalore Bangalore distance is very huge for road transportation, in this context it is strongly suggested MRPL management to consider a new LPG pipeline along the existing pipeline corridors. This requires proper engineering feasibility study with various options meeting the climatic conditions of Malnad and DK Districts. It is assumed that, the road tankers may not meet the MRPL approved fitness criteria. However such incidents along the state or national highways need to be avoided.
