Karnataka Caste Politics Set to Get Sonia Boost

Karnataka Caste Politics Set to Get Sonia Boost

V S Karnic

Bangalore, Apr 22 (IANS): The Congress is going all out to woo a powerful caste group in Karnataka that is generally perceived to be a strong supporter of the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) even as the latter dithers in setting its house in order.

State Congress leaders are set for a major score as they have succeeded in roping in party president Sonia Gandhi to be present at a birthday function of Sri Shivakumara Swami of Sri Siddaganga Mutt, who has a large following among the politically powerful Lingayat community.

With caste-based religious leaders wielding enormous clout in the state, political parties have been assiduously courting them in different ways.

The BJP, which came to power for the first time in the southern state in May 2008, took the cake in this exercise as it tried to win over sect-based religious heads.

Its government simply doled out millions of rupees every year in the last five state budgets to various 'mutts' or religious institutions. Its first chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who was forced by the BJP to quit over mining bribery charges in July last year, started the trend.

His successor D.V. Sadananda Gowda continued it in his first, and perhaps last, budget as assembly elections are due in April-May next year.

Though the Congress and Janata Dal-Secular parties have been ridiculing the BJP for being generous to these mutts at the cost of the tax payer, they too find it hard to completely ignore them, particularly when elections are near.

Lingayats and Vokkaligas are the two caste groups that have dominated Karnataka politics for decades, though they form just about 17 percent and 16 percent of the state's total population of around 61 million.

Lingayats, once strong backers of the Congress, are believed to have shifted their support to the BJP over the years following alleged neglect of the community by the party, particularly after then chief minister Veerendra Patil was unceremoniously ordered out by the party command in 1990.

The Siddaganga seer is a centenarian and celebrated his 105th birthday April 1 at his mutt in Siddaganga, about 60 km north of Bangalore.

A special birthday fete is being organised there April 28 at which Sonia Gandhi will be present, according to state Congress chief G. Parameshwara.

The Congress general secretary in charge of Karnataka, Madhusudan Mistry, and Parameshwara have already met the seer and discussed the arrangements for Sonia Gandhi's visit.

Though billed as a non-political visit as she will be visiting the mutt to greet the seer on his 105th birthday, it will, the party hopes, yield political dividends as the ruling BJP is battered by scandals, corruption and a determined bid by Yeddyurappa to become chief minister again in view of his so-called clout over the Lingayat community.

It will also placate the Lingayat leaders who are still in the state Congress unit as they have been openly demanding better positions and greater say in running the party affairs.

With BJP national leaders unclear about the hold Yeddyurappa has on his caste group and the possibility of factional fights intensifying in the party's state unit, the Congress could not have chosen a better moment to arrange for their supreme leader Sonia Gandhi to pay obeisance to a powerful community leader.

I don't know why 27 people have disagreed with Jossey Saldanha!!! Is it because they support rape, porn, corruption? Why else? Of course, the comment itself is not very valuable but I cant see why people should disagree? Just curious about the Indian mindset!!

Caste politics is going to stay for another generation, so every party will try using it to political advantage. However, for congress, that is not really the  problem. For congress the real problem is countering the anti-hindu phobia, which is selling very well. BJP today markets Hindus as victims under congress, rather than its own contribution towards upliftment.

Combined with that phobia, corruption scandals and slow decision making, which is a trade mark of congress, going against them. The trend shows non-congress political parties, which can provide a viable alternative, is set to form govt in any state. SP is the best example for that. Congress is still relying on old strategies, which no longer impresses people. It is time to rework new strategies.

A good move by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. Congress will bounce back to power in Karnataka in the next assembly elections. Even the famous astrologers have predicted Congress victory! It seems some people are jealous of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi because she has been able to lead the UPA for the last 8 years as the Chairperson, in spite of several ups and downs. Congress is the only alternative in our state at the present situation. Let us all support Congress and bring it back to power so that all people may live in peace and harmony. Long live Congress Jai Ho.

I have no idea of all the castes & creeds in Karnataka. So, for the last 65 years Indians are suffering from this caste based politics. When we will come out of our cocoon and see at the larger picture of powerful India. Is this is the same picture when Indian army is at work, or our scientists are at work. Is this caste based politics is relevant in 21st century.

Firstly, do not mislead the public with wrong information that BJP Govt. has doled out millions of rupees of tax payers’ money to various 'mutts' or religious institutions. Actually funds paid for the maintenance of temples, out of revenue collections of 2,51,012 Hindu Temples. 70% (Rs. 50.00 Crores) of Hindu Temples money is diverted for Muslim Madarasas and Haj by Indian Government.
Secondly, she is not coming with a clean image but with a truck load of Scams and scandals to point fingers at others.

Even though Lingayaths and vokkaligas communities comprising 16 and 17% out of total population of Karnataka,so far these two communities had got lion share in ministries,CM post and MLAs .Through out Karnataka's history both parties dominated the politics of Karnataka undermining 65% other population's voice. If Kurubas,Daliths and minorities join together, certainly Siddaramia,an Kuraba leader would have been CM quite long ago.

Social justice in democracy not limits to certain influential communities instead it should reach all communities with equal ratio.Congress,BJP and JDS, all three major parties are always appease these two dominant communities for vote bank politics.

Though Yeddy tainted for the time being, all three parties are cautious about his further political move and even political landscape/equation will defends up on his political move.

Shiva Kumara Swamy Sri Siddaganga, one of the wonders of the world who crossed 105 years still able to read with out goggle and his service to the society is enormous. For the auspicious function in Sri Siddaganga, participation of Sonia Gandhi will be an added attractions couple with indirectly wooing the certain community which may timely and fair in political language.

There is no doubt present congress party is dirty and corrupt, just look at the way they are functioning in UPA, it is 100% sure that they will be kicked out in next Lok Sabha election.
The news of Sonia Gandhi attending birthday function of Sri Shivakumara Swami of Sri Siddaganga Mutt, shows that there is no difference between Karnataka BJP and Congress, Lingayat is strong caste with out which Congress will never come to power, that is why BJP never expelled Yedurappa, and still Yedurappa is the strongest person and a crowd and Vote puller of that community, he is corrupt, he has gone to jail, he is facing several cases, he has been targeted by his own party as well as Congress & JD (S), still he is a fighter, and he will come haunting his opponents, this is how Lingayat communinty works, DVS is good man, but he can not win next assembly election for BJP, everyone in Karnataka & India knows that, even Congress knows that, he does not hold a mass appeal, so BJP will do all out effort to counter these moves from Congress, they have already met Yedurappa, and now have sang a song to support him at all cost, they have set a plan, we have lived in Lingayat community and we know how they work, the coastal people from M'lore/Udupi only think these people are silly, but they are smart, just see how Veerandra Patil (late CM of Karnataka- who also belongs to Lingayat became CM again after long gap).
We don't support any political party, as all parties are corrupt, present congress is not a same party commanded by Indira Gandhi or Rajeev Gandhi, which we all loved and respected, after their demise, congress can not form Govt on itst own, they have to depend on other regional parties and form a UPA Govt, People of Karnatak, wake up, elect only a person with clean image and good will to work for the people, only DVS and JP Hegde belong to this class, but in modern politics they can't last long.
Only god has to protect our nation from these corrupt parties.

“Maatro Devo Bhava” Finally Congress realized that with only minority vote they can’t come to power and rule majority. Pamper any Caste or Religion but you can’t ignore the basic religion of this beautiful Country. India got Independence but divided in to two parts for which British still pay the price but in their own Country and after Independence India divided into many sect unfortunately that credit goes to Congress only
