Power Crisis: Karnataka Govt Suggests Cutting Down Fans, ACs Usage

Bangalore, Apr 25 (PTI): Faced with acute power shortage, Karnataka Government today appealed to the people to cut down use of fans and airconditioners till the situation eased.

As the temperature continued to soar in parts of Karnataka including Bangalore, the peak hour demand for power supply has touched 170 million units daily, Minister for Energy Shobha Karandlaje told reporters here.

At present there was a gap of about 20 million units between supply and demand, she said and appealed to the people to conserve power by reducing use of fans, fridges and ACs.

She requested shopping malls not to use elevators and other electric equipment which consume more power. ''People should cooperate with the government to face the situation.''

The four thermal units of Raichur Thermal Power Station which were forced to shut down early this week due to shortage of water would resume energy generation by tomorrow in the wake of release of water from Narayanpura dam, Shobha said.

The government is planning to purchase 990 mw of power from private players to tide over the energy crisis.

Though the state was purchasing 250 MW of power from Chhattisgarh, but due to non-availability of transmission corridors only 60 to 80 MW of reached the state grid, she said.

She said  efforts were being made to purchase another 500 MW of power from Gujarat, but it will come through only next year.

Let me write how significant is the power-saving for individual. I am really upset the way state is working on this.

When ours was a small house with only 5 electrical incandescent bulbs of wattage from 25 to 100W
depending on where it is mounted, we had a electric bill of 35 rs per month.

As the years passed, the power surge, lighting and the storms often destroyed these bulbs and we had to shell out lot of money to replace them frequently. The electric cost rose to 55Rs, as the time passed.

Eventually, we could afford tubelights, and replaced hall, kitchen and bedroom bulbs with tubelights. We even bought a Raleigh table fan. The bill was still 55Rs the same year, but with one additional fan. But the cost of electricity rose year by year and our monthy bill was around 125Rs at some years later, but we had iron box, two table fans, one 21inch Sony TV and one or two aditional tubelights.

From 125 to 350Rs bill hike was a fast phenomenon few years ago. Eventually, we had to replace all the tubelights with CFL and CRT TV with a 32 inch LCD TV added a 4.5kg washing machine (rarely used), and the bill came down from 550rs to 275 Rs per month. At this point, we had 4 fans, but either one or two are switched for 8 hours the most, in the night.

All these illustrates that every household is finding a way to reduce the power consumption to
avoid paying huge money to the electricty board.

Now, the question to our minister What have you done to reduce power saving in the public office ? Secondly, none of our roads has street light. The NH uses halogen lamps when the road passes through the city limits. what have you done to reduce power ? Our village roads are dark in the night and is not safe.

I can openly comment that - all the public offices still depend on incandescent lamps because it is cheap and Government has no budget to upgrade them.

With the entire community moving to solar heater for water, solar cell&green car, will govt pay subsid?

Shobha is stupid. She does not have the basic idea of power consumption. Fans are same as a bulb, they consume about 60 watts. One cannot shut down the fridge. Only thing to control is use of AC, iron, elevators and water heaters. Being a power minister she should be little more serious and knowledgeable.

I totally agree with Ms. Shobha - Min for Power that the state needs to reduce the consumption of electricity.
However a few questions remain unanswered:
    1) Whom is she inviting for reducing the consumption
    2) Where will she divert the saved power
It is such a shame that middle and the lower classes of the economy have to make sacrifices to keep a few upper class and political people happy.
I would say make it a rule that all government servant shall not use A/C's in their offices and homes. This should make a big impact !!

First of all, the ancient fans (may be of 1947) keep rotating day & night (24x7x365) in the GOVERNMENT offices in Karnataka.. Switch off these fans and we will have a ASSURED power supply for one month... These ministers know only to ask we, the tax payers, to switch off fans and ACs and fridges and what not but why are they STILL using these power-consuming fans? They are not ready to cut down power at their own homes which comes free of cost in their quota...Let them turn down the power consumption in their homes and then advise the public...

Right suggestion ! Power saved is power earned ! You should not think you are an officer but human being first ! So switch off A/c, Computer, fans before leaving from office and also reduce A/c usage in houses. Also green cover in your house surroundings should be increased. Nowadays due to double road, flyover construction all trees lining the highways have been felled. They have to be planted again and we will have to wait for 20-25 yrs to drive under the canopy of trees :-(

Friends, It is not BJP or Congress or Janatha Dal (S), but who is going to lead the State positively is the question. However India has a vision to be a developed country beyond 2020. Within Middle East, planning for 2035 starts now, where we are lacking and how this can be mitigated. Is it only the government plan for infrastructure development for its tenure and not beyond that. Today a short term measure by the minister is given to switch off the fans and air conditioners. Where is the long term planning?. Our state of transmission of power is not planned, a single transmission line is used for ALL range of power (street lighting, low and high voltage system).

The transmission lines are very old indulging in transmission losses, which needs replacement in phases. The existing government has to budget this for upgrading the system. We need to enhance power by installing new power generating stations and not dependant on Hydro-electric system. Reliability and Availability of power, water needs to be ensured irrespective of government that rules and not the party criticism that comes finally. We are ALL one and we have to look forward with a positive approach and not think negative. Last but not the last, without proper infrastructure we will never be a developed country.

    Dear Minister
Thanks for your advise to over come the power shortage Ms Shobha Karandlaje ....this childish advise you had given because you think Kannadigans are fools and dumb thatz the reason Govt want people of Karnataka to pay heavy Taxes compare with other part of India, here every thing is expensive in Karnataka..sale tax fuel tax..service tax...etc etc you want people to pay tax and stay with out using AC fridge and fan during the scorching summer, lots of death happens due to heat so many people are suffering due to heat and you are asking to swith off AC and fan...then tel me when to use AC and fan? is it during winter or when its raining heavenly..? then why do u allow company to manufacture AC and take taxes from us? dont you have shame to say this.

Why do we pay tax? well...its for govt to provide better facilities for the people, being a minister have you done your duty? past 3 decades people of Karnataka faces heavy power shortage what you have done to over come this power problem? solution you found was SWITCH off the AC fan and fridge. I think you should be awarded for your solution. Instead of telling stupid things you should think a head of crises and do the necessary things for the state instead of fighting for power at least learn form Gujarat chief minister how to develop the stare

Millions of people have no proper shelter in our land.

Middle class family numbers are growing up, and they will tend to use fans, the most if they tend to stay at home. But it is unlikely that they use fans during day time, as most of the family members are either away on work, or in school or working in the office.

Rich-class family though small, have several palaces everywhere, burning ACs even for maids. Politicians come under this special category. Even Yediyurappa was in a special cell fitted with AC. Same is true for Kalmadi, Raja and Kannimozhi etal.

IT offices, industries are biting the max share of electricity. Government should be conscious to promote power-saving concepts for thise high-end industries.

Market provides 4-tick A/C units, low-power LED lights, power-efficient LED TV etc etc.,

Despite of those usage by the middle class family, we are facing a power-shortage. Why dont government think of replacing 40w tubelights with 6 Watt LED lamps which are equally bright ? Why dont they think of using other power-saving means in the public office ?

I think, our ministers are reactive. They only sanction land, power, water to big indstries such as MRPL, ISRPL, etc without thinking if they have enough resources.

anyway, let us switch the fans off or their helicopters while flying !
We will never have to think of switching off fans once again.

So politely she, the ex Lady of Karnataka, presently only the minister for energy, requested all of u to shut off water pumpsets, A/Cs, Fans, lights, etc etc - so that you may not have water to drink - - she said donot use fans/ AC - so you sweat a lot and use/collect the sweat as supplement to ur drinking water shortage - she said donot use lighting - so that old people and many others tumble and fall and get hurt. Did she have a chance earlier before entering politics to experience the difficulties of people - where many donot have a fan/s in their houses (forget about AC) - and just a dimly lit bulb to boast they have electricity in their house and these are majority in the state and this minister is asking all these people to conserve electricity - by shutting off all their electrical gadgets!!!!

I think it would have been wiser for her to issue a decree to all commercial est. firms to shut off power for an hour in the morning and couple of hours in the afternoon - as it, in the city our power is cut upteen times a day (24 hours) which she as minister is not aware of(simply because all these useless ministers have 24 hours elec, power) and telling the public not to use their electrical gadgets!!! I hope she now realises fm the comments of public and learn to be a better minister - have a great time in your airconditioned house/office Byeee

When rain water harvetsing made compulsory in Bengaluru sites measuring above 2400 sq.feet BBMP Maysor herself not followed the rule. Now honorable power minister is asking to use power equipment moderately to conserve power,I doubt the MLAs and ministers themself are not abiding the request/order?It is better to solve the problem without forgeting. We Indians remember the things only when there is problem. Please put your sincere effort to solve the problem and make yourselves to remember you by people by solving the problem.Try to find out how much power, Mysore power corporation is wasting/no meter for their employess residence so on....if I am not wrong...

SHOBAKKA FIRST TELL YOUR MINISTERS AND MLS TO CUT DOWN THE A/C, FAN AND A/C CARS THEN PREACH OTHERS !!! FIND A PRACTICAL SOLUTION INSTEAD BURDEN ON THE TAX PAYER !! YOU ARE ELECTED TO FIND THE SOLUTIONS AND GIVE BEST OF BEST SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC !!! GIVING A STATEMENT IN FRONT OF MEDIA NOT A SOLUTION !! YOU SHOULD GO TO THE NEIGHBORING STATES OR CENTRAL TO TACKLE THE SITUATIONS !! FOR GOD SAKE PLEASE STOP ROAMING AROUND WITH USELESS EX-MINISTERS AND CONCENTRATE ON THE JOB IN HAND.

It is a good move to control the power shortage but I am requesting you to start from your own house that includes Vidhana Bhavan, all the ministers and the MLA's houses where there is no power cut and the Airconditioners are working round the clock with the Tax payers money..As a common man we promise we do maximum to control the usage of power. Good Luck and hope we will have a continuos power that may benefit for the students who are going appear the exams and the hospitals where the power required most to save the patients during operation...

Low usage of A/C's and fans are not permanent solution for power crisis. Shobha madam, please give more importance to generate power by natural resources. Karnataka state got enough infrastructures to generate more power for usage.
