Mangalore, Apr 30:
It is a dream come true for all those want to experience a dinner date even as they float on serene waters. A floating restaurant named ‘Cruise and Dine’ started operations on Sunday April 29 from Bunder. It is the first such restaurant in the whole of Karnataka.

The double decker cruise boat will have the dining-on-the-water experience where a variety of local vegetarian and non-vegetarian delicacies are served to titillate the taste buds of visitors. It is almost a three and a half hour sailing experience along the humming Phalguni River. As per the partners of this unique venture, this restaurant is ideal for family get-togethers, birthday parties, corporate meetings, and kitty parties. Sea food like fish, prawns, squid, oysters, and crab are made available depending on the season.

On the top floor, ‘Kudru’ restaurant lets the voyager enjoy a soft sea breeze, and it has been furnished to cater to 125 persons.

‘H2O’, the air-conditioned hall, which is the lower deck has a rustic look with a dais and green room and is fitted with the best audio and video system. There are separate toilets for gents and ladies.

The DJ music provides awesome entertainment and a dance floor is also provided.

This ‘dhow’ (cruise) made of teak wood purchased from Dubai where it was floating earlier, and it has floated on Maldives’ waters. This vessel has the capacity to accommodate 250 tons, but if 250 persons are taken on a cruise it is only 10 percent of its total capacity. Further, there are life jackets and fire extinguishers placed on this vessel, keeping in mind security concerns.

After the formal inaugural programme held at the A/C hall (lower deck), the national anthem was sung and the first floating restaurant sailed in the water for about one hour. Young girls and boys danced to the music on the dance floor situated on the lower deck while others opted to sit on the top deck to feel the cool breeze.

Speaking to Daijiworld, J P Rao, one of the six partners, (other partners Soniya Bangera, Yogish Karkera, Dinesh Bekal, Philip J Periera, and JK Rao), said that they expect good prospects for this venture as tourism in the region has good potential. Also, this can be used by corporates for holding meetings. He added that already the vessel has been booked for a wedding.

However, there were demands for a separate jetty to anchor this boat by the organizers of this cruise, for which MLA Krishna J Palemar said that arrangement can be made at the new jetty. Also, removal of sand (dredging) was another demand of the owners of this boat.

Deputy speaker N Yogish Bhat, present during the inaugural ceremony, said that this was a feather in the cap as the tourism sector has greater potential in the coastal region.

There will be two trips from Bunder (old port) with the first trip taking off at 11.30 am, returning at 3 pm, and second trip taking-off at 7.30 pm and 11 pm. As an inaugural offer, Rs 250 is being charged per head and Rs 100 for children below six years.

To all FAKE Mangloreans like kannadiga, mangalore/dubai, Gerald, modankap-bantval & a fake captain so calledcapt.cornelio, udyavar...first know the partners & their capacities....learn to read first (1) this is cruising only on the rivers, owned by professionals ( I know JP Rao a hardcore business man & a Social worker) sure his team is as powerful as him, would have worked on all the safety first & later business. Yes like any business it can have the initial "teething problems"...my best wishes to them & next holiday will be in Mangalore....God bless "Cruise n Dine"...people support the new initiative from the young Mangalore entrepreneurs, JP Rao & Team !!!!

This is good for Mangalore.Let us compete with Kerala Tourism.

Now that the iron ore business is badly hit in Goa, alot of barges are available for sale.A barge could be renovated into such floating restaurants.

Congrats to the owners with my best wishes.

Sorry butI think this is a very dangerous move on a dhow.Every vessel that is certified to carry cargo cannot carry passengers- what are the DGS/MMD and Port authorities doing- allowing 250 persons to travel for 3-4 hours in the sea- besides lifejackets are there rafts are there fire extinquishers (I see food is being cooked/served on deck), are there emergency generators, etc. Who has certified this craft for carriage of paying passengers.
It will not be long before a lot of trawlers convert themselves into "dine & dance" vessels during the lean period if one is allowed to get away with it.
I once again say that this is a very bad move from safety point of view though maybe a good business.

i have my own doubts regarding the stability.weight/load is suppose to be at the bottom so the vessel can be stable.by adding the weight on top is very dangerous and can capsize.hope Port officer looks into the safety of this vessel and not to regret after the accident.

Congratulations and good luck for the new venture. We feel proud of the same and need such ventures at Mangalore as we grow leaps & bounds. Yes, Safety comes first and GD Shipping & MMD will have to ensure the same. Time to promote Mangalore as tourist destination. When our neighbours Goa & Kerala can do it, why not we ? As Mr.Edwin correctly sad, No pollution of sea water by dumping of waste/garbage please as cleanness is next to godliness. Eenitha special menu enchina...? longing to have kori roti and kane fry... If Indian Government introduces these kind of attraction, our tourism sector will improve. Cruise ships like paradise, santa monica are famous in Panjim Goa. But one thing hotels like Motimahal, Quality etc. etc. will experience reduce in business. Sure I will go with my fiancé when I am on leave in Mangalore. SAFETY PLAYS A VERY BIG ROLE IN CRUISE BUSINESS. I DON’T THINK SO THESE OWNERS HAVE ANY MAJOR CLUE ON THE SAFETY STANDARDS. ON TOP OF THAT IT IS A 1947 VESSEL.
A QUALITY LIFE JACKET MEETING THE SAFETY NORMS COST AROUND IRS 10 LACS FOR 250 NOS.
WILL THEY SPEND SO MUCH ONLY ON LIFE JACKETS. HERE THE OWNERS ARE TRYING TO FOOL THE PEOPLE AND MAKE A QUICK BUCK.

SO PUBLIC….MAKE SURE THE CRUISE MEETS ALL THE SAFETY STANDARDS BEFORE YOU BOARD.

I fully agree with Errol, Dubai / Mangalore. It is very important to ensure that this vessel is sea worthy for our rough seas. If all is been fixed, then this would be an additional recreation for mangalorean and would be real new experience, subject to prices will be kept at affordable levels.

Hey guys dont have another tragedy in Mangalore waters like the one they had a couple of years back in Kerala. High time all the safety aspects and other procedures are followed before hitting the waters.
