Mangalore, May 1:
In a tragic May Day incident that occurred in Haleangady near Mulky here, two labourers engaged in digging a well died after soil collapsed on them.

Madhanappa (25), son of Hanumanth Hunagundha of Agoli, Gangavathi taluk in Koppal district, and Syed Beary (65) of Mukka are the deceased.

The well was being dug in the property of Ravi of Haleangadi. Purandara of Mukka had taken the contract for the purpose. Over the week, the well was dug up to 20 feet.

On Tuesday at around 9 am, Syed started placing stones for the well. "At around 10.30, the mud collapsed from the top all of a sudden and two of us slipped and tumbled inside while  four others managed to escape, said Hanumantha who was one of the lucky ones.

Among the labourers, Madhappa's brother Lokesh, Halappa, Yamunappa and Nagappa managed to climb up to safety. Syed had started work only on Tuesday.

Hanumantha and Yoga were working on the top, so they were on the safe side. It is they who informed the police.

Mulky police rushed to the spot and with the help of locals the two bodies were retrieved at around 12.30 pm.

It is learnt that no permission was sought from the gram panchayat to dig the well.

May the soul of Madanappaand Syed Beary rest in eternal peace and give comfort to the bereaved families and friends. It is shocking and sad. This may have caused as no proper precaution was taken and the soil must have been wet whereby the mud must have caved in and buried the two alive. Luckily others escaped.

Generally in around mangalore wells are made this way without following any safety. Probably a erecting a safety ring around loose soil may a good solution to avoid such accidents in future. These workers have no insurance and difficult situation for their childrens after their death.

Just look around in your city on any May day, you see the building construction going on. The true value of May day is lost. Only We the white collar employees are benefited. Banks, offices are closed today & we expect our maids to work.
    Condolence to the bereaved family.

Kudumbi brothers are expert in digging wells. This incident reminds me a similar one happened in Sunkadakatte a decade back where two persons trapped inside the well and it was not possible them to come our alive.
Sad indeed. Condolences to Sayad and Madabba's family. We pray almighty to rest their soul in peace......
