Mangalore, May 6: The Mangalore Catholic Co-operative (MCC) Bank Ltd celebrated its 100 fruitful years of service at Milagres College grounds here on Sunday May 8 from 5.30 pm.

Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza presided over the function. Union minister for corporate affairs Dr M Veerappa Moily was the chief guest.

MLA B Ramanath Rai, NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Ronald Colaco, president of KE Global, Dubai, Ivan Fernandes, Mangalore Konkans president, Dubai, James Mendonca, deputy registrar of Co-op Societies, DK, R Palangappa, Dr Edward Nazareth and MCC Bank chairman Melwyn D’Cunha were present on the dais.

The programme began with a small procession by the managers of different branches of the Bank. Melwyn D'Cunha welcomed the guests and the gathering and Dr Edward Nazareth spoke briefly on the history and the workings of the Bank. A documentary on the history of the Bank was released by Ronald Colaco on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Bishop Aloysius entreated people to support MCC Bank in making a name for itself not only within the community but also in the country's banking sector. He lauded the MCC Bank's management and employees and urged them to keep pace with the changing times while achieving growth.

Expressing his pride and joy on being part of the event, Moily urged the Bank administrators to appoint good and able chief financial officers or chief executive officers and set them goals and targets that would thus help in achieve new milestones in the banking sector as this bank is already one of the largest urban co-operative banks in DK and Udupi district with the highest number of branches (16).

He also wished that the Bank would soon get NRI status and added that it is just a few steps away from achieving it

Ronald Colaco handed over the keys to beneficiaries Bhaskar Monteiro and Walter Rodrigues under the 'Swant' vehicle benefit scheme.

In his address Colaco expressed great delight on being part of the event. "We help others before we help ourselves, and thus other banks that have originated from Mangalore have reached heights, but MCC is still in the process of making a niche for itself," he said and added that he was proud of the Catholic community as a large number of entrepreneurs from the community had been instrumental in uplifting other banks in the region.

He congratulated the current administrative heads and office-bearers of the Bank for attaining a very high percentage of growth in terms of lending, deposits, number of share holders, members etc, and for ensuring greater progress in the last four years than in the last 96 years of the Bank.

He announced Rs 10 lac as a token of appreciation for the development of the Bank, thus urging other diginateries on the dias to donate towards the cause.

He also stressed the need to be philanthropic and help in building the society, and said that he keeps aside a certain amount of money for donating to the needy as it gives him peace of mind and blessings from god.

Ivan Fernandes, B Ramanath Rai and Palangappa also spoke on the occasion.

Former chairmen of MCC Bank Valentine D'Silva and M P Norohna were felicitated on the occasion. Cheques worth Rs 25,000 were handed over to two needy individuals. Advocate Chevalier Clarence Pais was also honoured.

A book on the history of the Bank, published by Stephen Quadros was also released on the occasion. The event was compered by Mallika Shetty.

Joseph Quadros proposed the vote of thanks. A musical programme by Joel Periera and team also marked the event. Members and well-wishers of MCC Bank were present in large numbers.

Its an important mile stone to cross for any organisation so for MCC Bank to celebrate Centenary.Inspite of Banks existance for 100 years, made headway only since two years under the leadership of present Chairman.Todays banking activity is being found as inavitable for human life unlike before.Five sheduled banks have taken birth in this district of which four are nationalised ones. All of them them are having global presenece and doing wonderful"Nation Building" actvity.DK dist is therefore called a credle of banking activity.

When things are so MCC a 100 year old bank should think of greater strides.Inspite of having so many bank branches in DK/Karnataka there is great dearth of good banking services in many areas.People throng for good cutomer service every where which alone will take the organisation to greater heights.
The leaders of MCC Bank should think of pulling the bank from co-operative structure and make it a full pledged schduled commercial bank because there is great potential in Christian community to embark on such project. It is always prferred to run an organisation with broad road map in mind and reap the benifit for the community in particular and soceity in general.
