Mangalore, May 8: In an incident that exposed the city's lack of preparedness to handle fire emergency, a Maruti Omni went up in flames following a short circuit near Mescom office at Shivbagh here on Tuesday May 8.

The Omni, said to be a second hand and belonging to a certain Ivan D'Souza of Marnamikatta, was being taken on a test drive from Mandovi showroom, driven by one Krishna.

What was amusing was the failed efforts of the people in dousing the fire and the laxity shown by the fire service.

The fire services were called immediately, but much to the anxiety of the people at the spot, the Pandeshwar fire personnel reportedly arrived a whole hour late.

Meanwhile, the people at the spot brought a fire extinguisher from a nearby petrol bunk, but when they began spraying it, they found that it was out of order!

After much delay, they managed to get another extingusher, but to their agony, they couldn't open it!

Finally, they got hold of yet another extinguisher and this time succeeded. However, the car was completely charred by then

The fire personnel at last arrived after several rounds of phone calls. But the huge agitated crowd that had gathered at spot was angered by their late arrival attacked the fire fighters. Heated arguments and physical fights followed, and in the process, the camera of a mediaperson was damaged.

Kadri police led by Venkatesh Prasanna arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.

Prasanna said that due to heavy traffic in the city, the fire service was delayed.

    1. Mediapersons and press photographers need to be given first aid kit and fire extinguisher( and necessary training), as they are the first to arrive at the scene!
    2. Every vehicle needs to have a fire extinguisher ( in Sikkim it is compulsory to carry one in your vehicle)

The fire station near AJ hospital is more near to the accident spot than the Pandeshwar one. Just 5 min drive on the highway. Hence the reason for the delay is not justified. Even if there is heavy traffic, the public should give the right of way to fire and ambulance services. But can we expect that when people are more interested in taking pics and videos in their mobile phones?
Even is the Police rehearse 'sagar kavach' everyday, its not going to help in a real life situation. This is a perfect example.

It is so sad to note this incident. However the fire occurred at a safe distant from the nearby petrol bunk. It is very right, as per comment from one of our friends that, the fire tender ran out of water and had been to Netravati River bank to fill. One of the sentences in news items indicates “traffic chaos made the police to arrive late” at the spot. However, what is the way forward or look ahead plan under such circumstances. At this point of time one has to highly appreciate relentless efforts made by people around to extinguish the fire. What would have been the scenario if it would have a major fire affecting people and property?. The fire of Maruti Omni was coupled with hydrocarbon. In such an event the public awareness should be there to extinguish such fires, similarly for electrical fires etc. Hope educating (training) the public is essential to act as front line fire fighters (rescuers) during an emergency and to provide first aid to people who have met with an accident either at road or at place of residence.

    ONE HOUR LATE!!!

This is a serious issue and the muncipality should look into it.

IT COULD HAVE BEEN A HOUSE OR APARTMENT ON FIRE WITH PEOPLE TRAPPED IN .

One hour late cannot be an excuse.

1.Most probably, Fire Fighters went to Netravati River to pump water from the river.Instead of praising our great fire fighters, people insulted & assulted them.
2.Most probably,Fire Extinguisher at Petrol Bunk was a replica model. It was kept just to increase the beauty of Petrol Bunk !
3.Finally,police came as expected in the CLIMAX scene.
