Mangalore, May 13: ‘A proper centre, treasury and a coaching institute are essential to educate the students about the opportunities and the exams that are available in the government’, said Anthony Mendonca, retired KAS officer and a member of Karnataka Christian’s Pragathi Samithi, during the Catholic Sabha convention.

He was addressing the gathering of members of Catholic Sabha during its 33rd annual convention here in the Milagres College ground on Sunday, May 13.

“There are very few catholics, working in public sectors. If this continues, then the community will have to face a lot of hurdles in the near future”, he added. A proper centre is necessary to avail government necessities for the catholic congregations. The centre must appoint a senior and experienced liaison officer who can deal with issues and escape exploitations.

A treasury should be founded in the diocese to gather funds for the youths who have no access to higher education but are compelled to go abroad for works. Lastly, coaching centre would enable the aspirant student’s better training for competitive exams like IPS, KAS etc, he added.

“If these three things are implemented in the diocese with the permission of the Bishop,  there will be some catholic IPS, KAS officers in the near future”, said Mendonca. “I am ready to be a part of this great work and contribute my support”, Mendonca promised.

Fr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the Bishop of Mangalore speaking on the occasion, lauded the efforts of Catholic Sabha, which  has produced great leaders for the society. This organization has got huge number of membership in the entire diocese. They help the apostolic service of the church immensely, he complimented.

Fr JB Crasta, the director of Catholic Sabha celebrated mass in the beginning of the programme as a part of thanksgiving. Walter Cyril Pinto, the president welcomed the crowd. William Machado, secretary briefly explained the programmes and reports of the year. BV Pinto, Judge of high court and Veronica Varnelio, social worker, Udupi too spoke on the occasion.

Fr. Onil D’Souza of CODP, Sushil Noronah, Ivan D’Souza and SL Bojegowda were other dignitaries present on the occasion. Many representatives of different churches of Mangalore diocese took part in the convention.

When we were doing our schooling, we were never told about competitive exams. There was no subject in our church catechism or in our school catechism. This is really a sad part. If we were encouraged by the church to go for this exams and if the church had provided free courses we would not have landed up in Dubai. Still we have not lost anything. Instead of raising funds for this cause by collecting money from the public, request the Bishop to take personal interest in this area and fund this project.

Catholic Sabha is doing wonderful work. However it lacks the support and patronage of elite people. Mr. Ronald Coloaco NRI Entrepreneur at the Youth convent held last had offered a contribution of Rupees twenty lacs for setting up of a training Institute to train our youth for competitive exams. We should make use of it without any further delay. Some of our youth cannot persue higher for want finance. Our resourceful persons could be persuaded to institute scholarship to such deserving people. This will go long way in helping our youth.
