Puttur, May 17: The foundation stone-laying ceremony for constructing a new church of St John the Baptist, Kokkada, near here, was held on Thursday May 17.
Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza laid the foundation stone for building the new church on Thursday evening.
Puttur deanery vicar Fr Gerald D’Souza, Kokkada parish priest Fr Ronald Lobo, assistant parish priest Fr Melvyn Lobo, parish council vice-president Cyril D’Souza and secretary John Coelho, engineer Anil Lobo and contractor Melvyn Correa were present on the occasion. Dr Ronald Lobo welcomed the gathering.
Kokkada Church was established in 1918 and now has 210 families. It also serves the spiritual needs of 80 families at Infant Jesus Chapel, located at Nellyady, near here, where the Novena and Holy Mass is being offered on every Thursday and on Saturday evening.
The existing building is dilapidated and faces constraints of space especially during Sunday’s congregation, which has necessitated the building of a new church on the existing plot. The parish has vast territory of 25 km and is a significant worship center for the faithful.
