Mangalore: MCC Raids ‘Pani Puri’ Stalls in City

Daijiworld Media Network—Mangalore (BG)

Mangalore, May 21: The MCC officials carried out a raid in different parts of the city against the ‘Pani Puri’ stalls on Monday May 21. As many as six officials raided nearly 18 stalls in Ladyhill, Kottara, Urwa Store, and continued the same in different parts of Surathkal as well.

Speaking to Daijiworld, MCC health inspector Bharath said that the owner of Kailas Bhel Centre, who owns nearly 70 such stalls in and around the city has given a statement on ‘Samaya TV’ that he has paid money to the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) to run these booths. He said that angered by this, the MCC commissioner asked officials to carry out a raid and remove all such illegal stalls with immediate effect.

Bharath added that unless and until the owner of Kailas Bhel Centre comes to their office and justifies as to whom he has given the money, the raids will go on. It is also expected that raids will be carried out in the city limits on Tuesday May 22 also.

Whilst I support the action against the illegal street vendors who serve unhygienic food, what is deplorable, is the way in which the officials went plundering the paraphernalia of these vendors, which is quite barbaric. Don't the so called Health Inspectors have civic sense. They were merely trying to show off their authority on these gullible men who were anyway on the wrong side of the law.

I am very happy to see that atleast some action is taken against these street vendors.
The last time I ate from such a stall didn't go well - giving me a bad stomach ache and the rest is common knowledge. No matter how many warnings we give to such vendors, they will not provide us with hygienic food.

All such stalls should be closed down and these raids should raise potential awareness that there is an overseeing authority. All shops should have licenses and especially the food providers should maintian high quality or atleast basic hygiene.

I really appreciate the officials. Hope they don't succumb to politics.

spineless action by MCC. If the owner of the stall has given money and made the statement , they would have kept their mouth shut. Now just because their palms are not greased, they take such brutal action of destroying food and taking revenge on an ordinary citizen. Will they do the same to the so called big hotels who too flaunt all norms of health and hygine? Shame on the Officials. They need to aplologise for such gross action.

@ Reshma... If someone comes to other state, does the hard work, saves money and buy property in his home town... what is your problem ??? Moreover to the best of my knowledge, Passport is not required for Indian citizen to work in another Indian state...

Regarding non-payment of tax, there are thousands of people in Mangalore itself, who earn in crores and evade tax...

Regarding the hygiene I agree it is not the most hygienic food, but then every hotel in Mangalore is equally unhygienic as the Bhelpuri stalls or even worse than that... Hope Reshma has eaten out In Mangalore hotels...

The act of Corporation officials is barbaric and can not be justified on any count. If at all they wanted the same to be removed, let them issue notice or at least give them time to vacate the area... this kind of acts of destroying and wastage of food is uncultured.

Why cant the officials who preaches tolerance amongst people practice the same. Is it because their misdeeds are exposed ??? If the allegations were wrong, they could have booked a case against him rather than doing this inhuman acts... Shame on the MCC officials.

This is only drama. In reality in democratic country like India no authorities/departments/officials can make nothing about keeping the area clean and food hygiene. If you see each nook and corner you will find abundant places like this.Pouncing upon suddenly on certain segments that too on poor people of the society is unethical.Throwing food and damaging property is another sin committed by the authorities.I don't agree with Ms.Reshma's comments that they are hailing from different parts of the country and making money over here. This is democratic country one can go anywhere of their choice and settle there and make property.Nobody can question in this regard. Here the concern is hygiene and cleanliness. If you go and see in certain hotels, restaurants, food courts, eateries they don't bother about the cleanliness and hygiene.

The way they prepare foods, vessels they used for preparation, water they use, utensils etc are very very dirty and filthy which is beyond everybody's imagination. But without any option one has to rely on these eateries just satisfy their hunger and quench their thirst. That is all.I appreciate if the concerned departments/authorities/officials act swiftly rather than inhumanely to detect all these lacunae and set it all right/rectify the things. Not show offs.Don't act like rowdies.

Very bad scene and the action by the MCC, Such a well educated and well manner people, who works for the MCC, but the way they act like " Gunda's " By the way Ms.Reshma's remarks towards to the action and about the daily bread winner's, doesn't matter either they are other state or etc.. but Citizen's of our Country I believe. At-least they give the new variety of fast food taste which is not available in around Mangalore. Instead of wasting the food by throwing on the road, there is people around in Mangalore street who can get at-least one time meal, such a dirty human being who show the anger on the Food, no sense, animal's act towards innocent people who earn the bread n butter !!!

When our Government official will learn how to live n act towards their own people ? Some people's prediction of 'HAFTA ' is the right thinking because I have good experiences with the same people even Police n Land measuring department n many more. When you go for any reason or help OR work, they make big noise, acting like they do us the favor, So much demand. God only can save them from this dirty job's.

The food thrown by the MCC officials r unhygienic & such food should not be consumed by the people. If people see the process how they prepare such type of foods, no one will dare to eat it.

You should be ashamed of the way in which you have conducted your raids and also a statement made by the Kailas Bhel Propreitor made you to take such action. Have you MCC or any other Government official heard of the numerous allegations the citizens have made on you. So are we going to see you sincerely take action on every matter that is of concern to a citizen. This is a perfect case of covering yourself so that Lokayukta or anyother bodies dont get to you. Do you MCC really think we citozens are fools.? Now my question to you is who is going to clean up the mess that I see in the pictures. Who the hell is going to pay for that. They should have given enough time to them to vacate the stalls instead of destroying stalls and wasting food on the street. Everywhere goondagiri. Where is the law ? Why can't we go according to law instead of forming various groups with full of illiterate, jobless youths and ruling the way it pleases them ? If so, why do we need Police dept. ? I am sure mcc has good reasons but confiscate in a civilized manner and take the owner to task. Give guidlines and reissue licenses based on norms. Don't throw food!!!! But tell me, why the wanton destruction of property and throwing away the food, could they have not given it to the poor and hungry or were the officials just showing their jaat. Couple of years back I have requested then Health officer Mr. Manjaya Shetty regarding these filthy stalls where every cup and plate is washed in one bucket of water and served the public. I have pointed the stalls in front of KUDCEMP building and near Tejaswini Hospital. But it went on deaf ears. Now media got involved and action started. It is disgusting to see the MCC officials throw the food on to the street. They could have used polythene bags instead of throwing on to the streets.
Having said that the pani puri stalls should be banned in the city as they are unhygenic.
People spitting on roads should also be fined.

I feel so angered when someone plays with food. Wish I had a magic wand so I could shove that spoiled food into the stomachs of these corrupt MCC officials. Rightly I can understand that these officials are fully fed and are not hungry when loads of people die of hunger. Utter shame on you MCC. Do not play with Food.

Totally inhuman act .. The inspectors behave as if they are innocent. Nobody will falsely claim on a TV channel that they have paid money knowning very well the repurcussion of their statement. The whole system in MCC is corrupt. I am one of the persons who has paid to number of officials in MCC to get my things done. This is nothing new. If I follow the path of Anna Hazare, my work will be done only after my death.

Oh God!I am pulling my hair. When will this corruption end? I strongly condemn the action of MCC officials. Where were they for so many days? Why this sudden health inspection. Just go to any hotel in and around Mangalore, they are so filthy. Do they have no eyes on these? So disgusting. Once I visited a hotel in the centre of Mangalore for breakfast. For my surprise the Masala Dosa I found a cockroach.. to whom do I have to complain. Is there any number to complaint in hotels? No more Mangalore hotels..

The MCC may be justified in removing the stalls, especially due to sanitary and public health concerns.Removing them as an act of vengeance, however, indicates misplaced priorities by the Corporation. What strikes me as the most appalling, however, is the fact that these officials seem to think that that road is a garbage dump, where they can simply toss organic food material, regardless of the soiling of public roads. And this too by officials of a body meant to uphold the health and well being of the Mangalorean society. Sad. Please, Sirs, in future raids, dispose of raided material in a more conscientious manner.

It is highly absurd to see officials throwing away food items. If MONEY was there in place of FOOD ITEMS, would MCC officials thrown it away?

The mayor of Mlore is accountable for harsh behavior of MCC officials. When she can't control her subordinates, why should she stay in mayor chair? There is a proper way to take action against offenders. Mayor Guljar Banu led MCC failed to do that.

There is a proper way to deal it. It is easy to destroy the foods. Look at other poor nations, they don't even have water to drink. If Owner made some statement, MCC officials should handle the issue's in very sofiscated manner, not that throwing the eatable to street.

Civilized MCC Health officials creating a scene here by throwing food items to the road.It should be disposed with garbage bag and these so called officials has least knowledge about environmental health and sanitation.BUT anyhow with out hafta such kind of petty street vending is highly impossible.Such kind of business certainly not follows health regulations and sanitation.

There are lot of caterers under Mangalore Corporation limits polluted the environment by releasing the waste to the open drainage and not following the health and hygiene norms. MCC officials should conduct raid on these places and should not wait for Samaya TV trailer.

These pictures are DISGUSTING. This is not the way to conduct a raid by wasting and throwing food all over the road side. It sends a very wrong message to the public in general. Whatever the case may be, it should be understood that food is a precious commodity and deserves respect and hence the MCC officer should be reprimanded immediately.

Very Sad to see the pictures. Wrong step from MCC. Why MCC health inspector Bharath cant go to owner of the Kailas Bhel Centre and ask to whom he has given the money instead of damaging the stalls of poor Pani puri seller.

so funny it is..mcc people conducted the raid and messed up the entire place.. conducting the raid was ok,but why could not mcc officials carry huge black polythene bags and tell the pani puriwalas to dump everything in it,rather than put it all over in the ground.cleaning the mess by making a mess...lack of planning.
anyways good work by the health inspector..!!
