20% Growth in Passenger Handling at Mangalore Airport

Mangalore, May 23 : Mangalore Airport has witnessed a quantum jump in its passenger handling with a growth of nearly 20% for the first four months of 2012.

Airport Director M R Vasudeva says that Mangalore airport handled 3.21 lakh passengers in the first four months of 2012 as against the 2.68 lakh passengers it handled during the same period last year.    The growth is attributed to connectivity to newer locations and more flights resulting in more passenger volume.

Vasudeva said there are direct flights from Mangalore to Hyderabad and Chennai which has led to the growth of passenger traffic. Besides this there is an additional flight from Mangalore to Mumbai by Air India Express. “Earlier Air India Express flight coming from Dubai used to be parked at the airport whole day.  To make the best use of the facility Air India Express has scheduled a regular flight to Mumbai.  With these additional operations passenger traffic has witnessed  quantum jump in the first four months of this year.

Out of the total passengers handled at Mangalore airport 86,544 were international passengers for the first four months of this year, which comes to 27% of the total passengers handled at this station.  As of now Mangalore Airport has flights to most of the gulf countries.  The flow of international passengers would have been much higher but for the lack of competitive price available from Mangalore, says Vasudeva.  He further adds:  “Due to lack of competitive pricing which many airlines offer from Mumbai or Cochin most passengers prefer to fly from these destinations which has affected our international passenger traffic”.

When asked whether declaring Mangalore as an International airport would enable more airlines to be connected with Mangalore, he said that such a status has nothing to do with connectivity of more airlines.  Even with the present status of Mangalore Airport as a customs aerodrome different airlines can operate from here without any hindrances.  The only criterion is that these airlines have to request the government to allow them to operate to international destinations, which would lead to a considerable increase in the passenger traffic at Mangalore airport, he stated.

Growth has taken place due to increase in number of air passengers. And not because of central Govt. Central Govt is not able to give International tag.

Do not try to fool others here. What Rakesh said is correct.

    Rakesh shetty,

You make statements which makes you a fool.If Government is corrupt the growth wouldnt have taken place.Aviation is under central Government, you should acknowledge the Growth has taken place even though it is slow. As far has corruption is concerned, even if you thrown any one out,it wont come to a halt, you can reduce it. Ask your self, R You corrupt, do short cuts, give bribe to get the work done fast??You got all the right to vote for right people rather then right party..Dont be a UPA hater..when Central government has got no majority in its own and regional parties taking a swipe at it, cannot do much. There should be only 2 parties in India. Ruling party and Opposition party. No changing parties, If you want to change resign from Membership and pay the cost of conducting next election.

Govt.is not allowing other international airlines to Mangalroe
Govt.is ready to face the passengers problems and not supporting the passengers. Air india express is the only airline is operation from Gulf country, they say AIExpress is the budget Airway, but it is wrong, charges are not too high, budget is only for luggage 20kgs. Due to no competition AI is earning lot but they are not giving proper salary for the pilot & they are on strick, is govt have any idea how panic they are depending only AI.

The fact is Air India to M'lore is expensive. It is cheaper to fly to Mumbai from Doha, then fly to M'lore, again fly to Mumbai and to Doha. I had to attend the Silver Jubiliee of my brother's priesthood I flew like that which worked out fine,no headache, only thing you should have some one in Mumbai to stay overnight. After Bangalore now Mangalore is fast growing City of Goondas, Since 60 year's the Central Govt has neglected and left the Airport on the hilltop they never tried it to shift it to the Sea. Mr. Moily, Mr. Krishna, Mr. Oscar and all the other minister's mentioned by Rakesh gave only good Statement's to the Media. Kerala is Small so there are no factories there, they wrap a wrap around and run away from there, so they need 4 airport's to go back, one which is still to be developed. All are looking forwad for the next election, we want to throw this UPA Govt into full majority and show the door to the Useless, Corrupt, ill legal mining and land Grabbing state govt, this was what in Rakesh mind, I penned it for him.

Mr. Rakesh Shetty dont compare with Kerala, Kerala is a unique, the peoples of Kerala are united and they are fighting for the betterment of people and development of their state but in other states they are fighting for caste and communal politics then how can develop their state if people indulge in such type of politics.

Public are fooled every now and then by declaring some figures of growth about Mangalore Airport whereas our agony of dealing with Air India Express continues for ever. The "International" tag to Mangalore Airport seems to be a distant dream. For the timebeing, we have to be content with the fake figures provided by our officials and the core issue remains unresolved.
