Doha: Wilfy Day - Celebration of Womanhood Through Legend’s Works

Media Release

Doha, May 31: The friends and fans of the late Konkann Kogull Wilfy Rebimbus are eagerly waiting for the Wilfy Day scheduled to be held on Friday June 8 at the RasLaffan Hall, Concorde Hotel here. Even after two years of his demise, the late Wilfy Rebimbus has a huge fan-following and his aura continues just like his legacy. He was just not a musician as many know him but was a Konkani institution. While his contribution to Konkani music is unmatched, there were other facets of his extraordinary talent which at times have gone hidden. He was also an ace playwright and well-known writer too. So Wilfy Day is a special occasion wherein all facets of his unparalleled talent are brought forth and presented.

The first Wilfy Day was organized by a few like-minded friends of Wilfy lead by noted Konkani actor-director and artiste of great repute Eddie Sequeira in April 2011. The support received from Wilfy’s fans, the encouragement from like-minded people was instant and heartening. It was then decided to continue the legacy of Wilfy through annual Wilfy Day. The theme of this year’s Wilfy Day is ‘Celebrating Womanhood through the works of the late Wilfy Rebimbus.

Accordingly the rehearsals are going on full swing for the second Wilfy Day. There will be many beautiful, meaningful songs from the late Wilfy, not recorded or heard in many years that will be presented in this show by the highly talented local singers, trained by Konkann Kogull’s daughter Veena Pais nee Rebimbus. Beautiful dance choreographed by Prabha Rego and actors enacting few songs in the beautiful ambience of the '5 STAR VENUE' are sure to make the weekend evening a pleasantly memorable one.

Last year for the first time in Qatar a Konkani poetry session was held on Wilfy Day. This year again a Konkani poetry session will be the part of the celebration owing to public demand. Gladson D’Almeida will be the moderator of the poetry session. Budding Konkani poets Prabha Rego, Della Rego, Vivek Monteiro along with Veena Rebimbus & Eddie Sequeira will be reciting poems.

Sana Britto who made it to the finals of recently-held SOAD-3 International, GVOM II finalists Preema Pinto and Rupert Lobo along with Rebimbus family Veena, Arthur and Arwin will be presenting some of the best songs ever composed by Wilfy Rebimbus. There will be a special rendition by talented Nandita D'Silva while young singers Rupal, Chrissal, Elreena, Veenal & Sybal, established local singers Launa, Jane, Eva Wilma, Emilia, Pramila, Sunita Tellis and singer couples Namita-Remy, Nina-Vincent too would join together in dishing out a sumptuous musical gala evening.

The organizers have also informed that the venue can accommodate only 250 people. Hence those who would like to come for the programme are requested to be there on time to get entry which is again FREE.

All the best for 'Wilfy Day' and god bless.
I read about 'budding' writers here. A sincere advice to them. Read , Read , Read and again Read. You will never know when you have become a 'Flower'. Others will note, and then you need not bother. Ask many great
poets like Melwyn and they will nod in the affirmative. Many famous 'writers' too will agree, but then they would like you to'observe' too! So 'read' and 'observe' n you will be there!
    Happy writing!

    Dear Eddie, Veena
It is heartening to read proposed ‘Wilfy Day’ in Qatar, especially celebrating the immense contribution Wilfy had done through his songs dedicated to ‘Womanhood’. From his emotion-filled songs on mother (Zar mojo dev maka…..) to importance of woman in a man’s life (tuje win mog na, rag na, bhog na bai..),to the romantic, naughty and teasing innumerable love songs on girls/wives/friends he has described and celebrated every aspect of a woman’s life and relationships. He was a true gentleman with immense respect for womanhood.

No doubt our great Wilfy is a priceless ‘Konkani institution’, who according to me deserves highest honour in the Konkani world. He is like what Elvis Presley was for Western Music. In an era of self-praise and bought/forced flattery that we see with some artists with mediocre level of composition and tunes, Wilfy is the only one who still dwells in the heart of all true Konkani quality music lovers and rightly so. I truly wish you all the best and please carry on the good work. Long live Wilfy's songs.
