Udupi: 'Namakarana' of Frogs Held in Hope of Early Rains

Hemanath Padubidri
Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Jun 2: A 'namakarana' for frogs was held here on Saturday June 2 at 10.30 am, in the wake of delayed rains in the district.

The namakarana was organized by the district Nagarika Samiti, under the leadership of Nityanand in Kidiyoor Hotel premises.

The baby frogs were placed in a cradle for the namakarana. There were six frogs, brought from Kolalgiri. They were given the name of 'Maleraya'.

This is not the first time frogs are being used as a ritual to bring early rains. Frogs were married in 2008 and a 'seemanta' ceremony was held in 2009.

After the ceremony, the frogs were left in Nayarkere.

Sharath, Sundari, Bharathi, Ganeshraj Saralbettu, Rakesh and others were present.

Dear Agnello, you are 100% right. The people who organized this were uneducated but they did not harm any one. Their act only showed their concern towards others. They were good at heart. But look at majority of so called educated, civilized comentators who left no stone unturned to call them idiots, mad, stupid etc!!!! and spit venom out in every possible way.

    Dear organisers and participants,
I thank you for this namakarana ceremony. Thank you for wishing all of us abundant rains. We definitely need those rains. Even those who made fun of you in this forum for your belief and your tradition need the rains.Though you did this in all faith and best wishes for your neighbours they thought this was a worthy of a good tease.By poking fun they had their emotional release which is another good. You never hurt anybody not even the frogs. Rest assured you are so much better people at heart than those of us with intolerance as most of the replies in this forum come out.

All of you forgot and making fun of this poor "KAPPE" who was forced to take part in this ceremony.
Why the rains are delaying -
If guys like Ragupathi Bhat makes a drama of praying to gods - arranging prayers in the God's house - naturally rain Gods will be very upset
That is why the arrival of monsoon is delayed. And you can very well imagine when DP/RS/Dr.K and the one & only NN there to pray - Gods are more than angry

Jobless people should know this is 21st century…and the frogs never have any role in bringing the rain on earth. The God almighty blesses the rain. But you people should stop this frog’s marriage, seemantha, namakarana etc if rain falls more then maybe frog’s divorce. Let it the name of Mangalore Udupi twin districts as “BUDDIVANTHARA JILLE” DON’T CHANGE IT AS “BUDDI VANTHE (KAMMIDA) JILLE”

The frog is seen in creation myths to Hindus. In the Rig Veda the Great Frog supports the universe and is representative of the matter from which all is created. In Vedic traditions frogs are seen as deities that chant by croaking for rain in a time of drought.

The frog held important roles in western mythology as well. In early Christian myth the frog symbolized resurrection and a higher stage of spiritual awakening. As well European folklore states that it is good luck to have a frog show up in your home and if heard outdoors it signified coming rain.

As much as the frog has been a symbol for life and birth it has also been a symbol for death. Another European myth held that it was bad luck to kill a frog for they housed the souls of dead children. In the ancient Zoroastrian religion of the Middle East the frog was associated with the deity or anti-creator Ahriman. It wasn’t until Europe’s Mid-evil times that the frog was given such an unfavorable rap in the common culture. It was during this period that the frog went from a sacred symbol of creation and death to being seen as evil. The frog along with a handful of other animals was seen as being a witch’s familiar also known as devoted magical animal thus attaching the negative stigma that they have on them today.

In Egypt the frog is most commonly found associated with the goddess Heqet who was the goddess of fertility and childbirth. Sometimes depicted as a frog or a woman with a frog head Heqet was seen as protectress of childbirth. Her priestesses who were trained midwives wore amulets that bore her image. It is theorized that the reason why the Egyptians saw frogs as being a symbol for childbirth and creation was because during certain times of the year thousands of frogs would surface from the Nile River. Thus creating the belief that this was an omen of fruitfulness. In the Greco-Roman tradition the frog was a symbol of Aphrodite an

I am very happy to see the three leading ladies who are my next door neighbours. They are Sundari amma, Saraswati amma and Sumathi amma... Now I believe that traditions and superstitions are so much deep rooted in our society that we cant change them so easily even by education. Instead of praying to God, we end up doing frog marriages, naming of frogs, etc with the hope of getting rains... First we must refine and repent for the wrong deeds and abstain from wrong deeds and seek Gods mercy and blessings so that He is pleased with us and send us rain in balance...
