Bangalore: Tons of Fun at FKCA 'Mangalore Maza' Annual Sports

Bangalore, Jun 3: The Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations (FKCA) hosted their annual sports meet 'Mangalore Maza 2012' for their member associations on Sunday, June 3. The event was organized at the St Joseph's Indian High School grounds, Bangalore.

The inaugural function was graced by chief guest Fr Peter Pinto, rector and finance director of St Joseph's Institutions and the guest of honour Fr Joy Fernandes, principal of St Joseph's Indian High School. FKCA chairman Valerian Fernandes welcomed the chief guests and the gathering. In his speech the chief guest commended the work of FKCA in organizing such a sports event for the community which would help in preserving the language and culture.

Rohan, a rising cricket star was the torchbearer of the event and the chief guest lit the torch. The dignitaries on the stage released balloons and declared the event open. All the presidents came forward and all people present took a solemn oath to participate for the spirit of the sports and play a fair game. Later the guests and the FKCA office-bearers where introduced to the teams.
 
After breakfast, the event took off with two matches of cricket for men being played simultaneously on two grounds and the women's throwball game being played in the adjacent court. The registrations for the individual and inter-association games were then opened. The games were conducted for people of all ages and gender, which included picking of marbles for kids below 3 ft, bursting and blowing the balloons, hopping race, sack race, balancing the ball, walking on the moon, lemon-n-spoon race, necklace 100 m running race. Inter-association games included cricket, throwball and relay race. Lunch was available at the venue along with soft-drinks and snacks.
 
Eight associations fielded their teams in the women's throwball game and in the finals the defending champions Konkani Catholic Association Bangalore (KONCAB) defeated the Konkani Kutamb, Indiranagar (IKK) Bangalore in a tight match of 19-25,25-18,15-12.
 
Twelve associations fielded their teams in the men's cricket match. In the final match the defending champions Konkani Catholic Association Bangalore (KONCAB) defeated Konkan Catholic Association, Mathikere-Bangalore (KCA) by 4 wickets with just a few balls to spare.
 
Prizes and trophies were given away to the winners in the ceremony held late evening. This year too the Sezari association of Bommanahalli Bangalore topped the points chart in the overall games and snatched away the FKCA Mangalore Maza Champion’s Trophy. FKCA cultural and sports secretary Wesley Fernandes supported by the team of volunteers did a commendable job in organizing the event. After the prize distribution all the people departed from the venue with their heart content from the eventful day.
