Udupi, Jun 4: The monsoon rains arrived in the district moderately, without thunder and lightning, on Monday June 4 bringing with some relief from the sweltering heat.

The first rains also caused road mishaps due to a slippery highway, worsened by drained engine oil from heavy traffic. While three persons including a pregnant woman died in road mishaps, 19 students were injured in a bus collision at Brahmavar near here.

The rainfall recorded in the district was 9.6 mm while in Udupi city it was 5.9 mm, Kundapur 9.2 mm, and Karkala 14.2 mm.

The monsoon indeed brought solace to the people after a scorching summer. People were found walking in the rain without raincoats and umbrellas, enjoying the stead patter of raindrops. Shops selling seasonal necessities did brisk business..

Some readers have mentioned about Rain Water Harvesting. That is a very good method which saves us at the time of water crisis. To the best of my knowledge,In India rain Harvesting is famous in Tamilnadu,Rajasthan and Kerala. It yielded a good result in Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.

Our politicians have not thought about this seriously.May be,they believe KAPPE MADUVE than rain harvest.China is NO.1 in this project.Chinese never miss opportunity.Actually, they create opportunity..That is the difference between India & China..

“Maleraya kept his promise alive” by bringing shower in time. We all should pray with “God of Nature” to bring enough rain this year and control flood situation too so that his own people should not suffer from excess rail fall. I think this is the time for our Coastal Authorities should develop the notion of “Rain Water Harvesting Plan” since year by year scarcity of water going bad to worse. Government should also think seriously the Idea of APJ Kalam to interconnect the Rivers so that flow of water will not waste by merging at Sea

Finally the much awaited rain has arrived to the much relieved people who were fed up of the sweltering heat. The rain God heard every ones prayers and hope they have much enough rain for the season. There were a few fatal casualties and injuries. Drivers and bike riders should take maximum precaution as roads become very slippery during the first rain due to the oil.
