Mangalore, Jun 5:
A seminar on former defense minister George Fernandes organized by George Fernandes Vichara Vedike, Mangalore, was held at Town Hall on Monday June 4. The seminar was organized to celebrate his 82nd birthday.

On the occasion, four resolutions were read out which demanded naming the city’s central railway station after Fernandes, to build a park in Fernandes’s name on a five-acre plot, to include a chapter on the leader in school books, and to name the road from Karambar school (near Bajpe) to Old Air Port Road after Fernandes. Interestingly, a senior person from the audience drew the attention of the Vedike to naming the New Bejai Road too after the former defense minister. The memorandum stating the resolutions was handed over to deputy speaker N Yogish Bhat.

Bhat inaugurated the seminar and said that Fernandes had the aptitude to implement the projects. He said that Fernandes actively participated in trade union movements in Mumbai though he had gone with the intention of getting into religious activities. “He had a clear cut vision when he was the defense minister and was also very well aware of the fact that China is a major military threat to India than Pakistan,” said Bhat. He said that Fernandes is a leader with devotion for the nation.

J C Madhu S Swami, former MLA, Chikkanayakanahalli, addressing the gathering said that Fernandes is a clear reflection of a Socialist. He recalled an incident wherein Fernandes did not hesitate to address the gathering of merely five or six people though he cracked the biggest scam in the nation involving Harshad Mehta.

Michael B Fernandes, labor leader, former MLC, the chief guest, said that Fernandes was upset in recent years over false allegations made against him in the media.

Dr M P Nadagowda, president, JD(U) Karnataka, presided. Thonse Jayakrishna Shetty, Jayaram Shreeyan, H K Balasuri, R L Dais, S P Changappa, Commodore Pereira, and Nazeer Ullal were the guests.

Dharmendra K, Maurice D’Sa, Sudhakar, M Rekha, and Vishanth D’Souza of the Vedike were also present.

However, the poorturn out of participants dampened the spirit of many of those gathered. There were about 80 people present throughout the programme in the Town Hall with a seating capacity of 1,000. Also, the lengthy addresses by some speakers caused people to lose patience and leave.

D'mello of kinnigoli is reffered is different from famous Union Leader Mr.P.D'Mello - a road 'carnac bundar' itself name after him. Driver D'mello is brother in law of Kinnigoli Pinto (siser's husband) - who served also as Union Leader in Premier Electricals - now lock-out.
Pinto knows very well Ravi Belagare.

I recollect tributes given by a politician to 'Fernandes' during a Railway function. He attributed Konkan Railway to Oscar Fernandes. Funny, such ignorant people are also Politicians!

    Dear All commentators,
I only voted Mr.George fernandes when he won election from Bombay central for the first time as an MP.Just for your information,he went for priest hood & left the Seminary just before he was about to be ordained as priest saying if I have to serve the society I cant do it within the four walls of church. He was not a corrupt minister. He started Taxi drivers co-operative bank in Bombay,to serve the poor taxi drivers in Bombay. If he has Rs.14 crores today,I believe that he has earned the money as an MP & Minister, and also the minimum profit earned from his CO-Operative Bank in Bombay, which I believe is still functioning.

However I did not like his policies when he became Industry minister & did not renew the licenses of Coco-Cola & IBM.But when he became Railway minister,he struggled a lot to give us Konkan Railway to which all of us should salute.Today we wouldnt have Konkan Railway,if we didnt have George as Railway Minister. Many of U may be knowing that he was a great trade union leader for Taxi Drivers,BEST,Railways,Street Vendors etc.

He is the one who objected to shift the Grant road prostitutes away from Bombay.Unfortunately he has has to shift his base to Bihar, when for the first time Mr.Bal Thackray started creating problems for all of our Mangaloreans & Udipi Restuarants in Bombay during late 1960.

    KRPrabhu, Kudla/Bengaluru,

Thanks for great tribute to a great leader.

Let me share my personal experience of seeing George first time.

It was in 1978 during Karnataka Assembly election,,, he was passing through Shirva on a quick election speech at bus stand.

He was very powerful Union Minister then(one of the great pillar in defeating Indira after emergency),,, when he got down from car and was proceeding towards dais Policemen started saluting him as protocol.

Perhaps this must have reminded him police beating and torturing his brother Michael during emergency 1975-1977 in Bangalore.

First thing he said to policemen,,, I dont need any protection from you guys, please go home.....

Can any Union Minister go out without Police Protection???

When he came to Mangalore to inagurate Konkan Railways,,, I think he came in a goods train because he never wanted to spend govt money on a special train or special plane.

Look now even a small time leaders in office or out of it use private planes to travel....

Its sad to see people without knowing him talking cheaply about him like "Casket Scandel" etc etc...

Its possible that some people in his party(Jaya Jaitly?) made money because of their proximity to him...but I never for a second think he is capable of being corrupt.

    Jai Hooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Among the resolutions, the first and foremost should have been the demand that the public, especially his supporters be allowed access to see him and know about his wellbeing since, health wise he is passing through hard times these days. It is a great irony that this once firebrand leader of the Indian masses, who always lived among the common people, especially the working classes today his wellwishers and supporters are denied the right to see him or even to know about him. I wish at least the media of his hometown, Mangalore, should keep the public d regularly about his present condition.

I had been following news of Mr.George Fernandes right from emergency days. While other opposition leaders were jailed during the dark days of emergency, he was in hiding. Later he was jailed on the false accusation of involvement in Baroda Dynamite Conspiracy. In the 1977 elections, he won with a lead of 3,34,000 votes from the Muzzafarpur constituency,a big record in those years. He was rewarded with the Communications and later the Industries porfolios in Mr.Morarji's cabinet, Railways in V.P. Singh's Govt. and Defence in Vajpayee's Govt.

After leaving Seminary, he joined Mr. Placid D'Mello as his Union Secretary in mid 50s and later took over as Union Leader. But I never ever heard or read that both these well known leaders of their times had worked as conductor or driver.

I thank Daiji for this wonderful coverage about Sri George Fernandes
and giving an oppertunity to readers/well wishers to have a say about this fearless leader, voice of lakhs of voiceless, mesaiah of trade union movement,a great patriot and fighter,a
distinguished Parliamentarian and son of the soil 'amche Manglur'.What ever said about GF is ok but what about his present position who is confined to 'house arest' and not being permitted to have access by country men except his brother.George is a NATIONAL ASSET and it is imperative that he should have public access at this old age by his loved ones.Whether Mangaloreans can do something at this juncture for this living legend George Fernandes who is in his evening of life?

Mr.George Fernandes , A great leader of yesteryears. He was the master mind behind Konkan Railway , it implemented because of effort . He served the super most position in central cabinet as Defence minister .His leadership among the labourers at coal fields in Bihar also unquestionable.

It was heard that he reserved his life for the welfare of labour class people. His own dress code when he was sitting at the super most position also have been seen by all of us.

BUT from where he got all his wealth ?He didnt had any property when he left Mangalore years back.He was in socialist party for years. We have seen TEHALKA case and later we also seen his family fighting for his property. We know his intimacy with Jaya Jaitley.

IS THIS THE QUALITY OF A PERSON TO BE CALLED AS A GREAT PERSONALITY ? iS IT NECESSARY TO NAME RAILWAY OR ROADS ON HIS NAME ???

To me George Fernandes has double standards. He wanted India to follow socialist principals and kick the capitalists (Coke) out. He tried to push these ideas down the throats of all Indians, but sent his own son to study, work and be a capitalist in America. He has a legacy of 14 Crores ( that is what the newspapers claimed when the family feud between his brothers and estranged wife started). Now from where these 14 crores came is the big question, when George Fernandes is seen to be leading a simple and frugal life. Some questions will always remain unanswered?. As far as his contribution to the trade unions, railways, most specially the Konkan railways there is no doubt that it is only due to him that this project saw the light of day.

Politicians are usual with their lip service to serve people, but really they serve themselves. Mr. George really first served the people and later became politician to serve the people. Presently if he is not well adored, it is because unlike others, he did not amass wealth for himself.

Mr. George Fernandes is one of the few Politicians who is relatively honest and clean, lead a simple life and had the "workers" welfare as priority. Comments from Naresh Dhillon - Kinningoli/Patials that he was a BUS CONDUCTOR in Bombay are incorrect to the best of my knowledge. His vocation to be a priest was not to be and he left the seminary as his calling was elsewhere. He has done well as Railway / Defence Minister & we owe the Konkan Railway to him.

Well thought decision by George Fernandes Vichara Vedike to name one road after George Fernandes name as “George Fernandes or G F Road” All Political Parties should support this idea but I believe since he was associated with NDA there may be some Political Leaders will not support this idea though they will not oppose openly. But be careful too else matter will go back to “10 Janpath Road” and they will propose to name it as “Oscar instead of George” then even road will also ashamed to serve the people

Mr.George Fernandes started his career as an 'Bus Conductor' in Mumbai having D'mello from Kinnigoli as Bus Driver. After wards he involved in Trade Union started from Hotel Worker's Union inspired from none other than Dock Men's Union leader P.D'mello. It looks like he his sincere person throughout his career - but not given much importance in karnataka.
