Mangalore, Jun 15:
Twenty young men, who were preparing and forming themselves to be priests to work in the vineyard of the Lord, were ordained deacons at St Joseph’s Seminary, Jeppu.

Among the 20 deacons, 5 belong to Mangalore Diocese, 6 to Kannur diocese, 1 to Calicut diocese, 3 to Carmelites, 2 to Betharam Fathers, 1 to Shimoga diocese, I to Gumla diocese, 1 to Jashpur diocese.

The ordination rite of the diaconate was celebrated with a solemn liturgy of the EuchariSt After the proclamation of the Gospel, the rector of the seminary Fr Joseph Martis presented the candidates to Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore to raise them into the position of clergy. Subsequently the Bishop instructed the candidates with the Word of God. In his homily, Bishop urged the ordinandi to do the will of God generously and to serve God and mankind in love and joy. Addressing the deacons Bishop expressed, “You are the ministers of the Word of God and you have to express in action what you proclaim by word of mouth.”

Later, the aspirants pledged to lead a life of celibacy and obedience. After the litany of the saints, the ceremony proceeded with most important sign of the ordination, that is, laying on of hands on the ordinandi by the Bishop. The rite succeeded in the investiture of the deacons with the stole and dalmatics. Afterwards the Bishop gave them the Book of Gospels saying, “Believe what you read, preach what you believe and practice what you preach”. The ritual ended with the kiss of peace.

The Holy Eucharist was followed by the felicitation of the newly ordained deacons. Priests, religious, seminarians, parents, friends, and relatives of the deacons witnessed the solemn diaconate liturgy. The beauty of the Eucharistic celebration was enhanced by the angelic singing and prayerful liturgy.

Twenty young men were ordained deacons. They studied for several years theology, went to church, read the Bible, prayed and worshipped.
They were formed at the seminary and now they will begin to work in the vineyard of the Lord and they will be ordained priests in one year.
The ordination rite of the diaconate was celebrated with a solemn liturgy of the Eucharist.
Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore urged the ordinandi to do the will of God generously and to serve God and mankind in love and joy.

That will not be easy for the 20 young deacons. They are young, faithful and have a strong belief but the world has changed.
They will leave the seminary and live and work in a parish. The young deacons will face difficulties and make their own experiences in a fast changing world.
Globalisation has reached India, new technologies, laptops, computers, smartphones a strong Indian middle class, new social movements have changed India tremendously.
Values and perceptions have changed and science has a great impact on people in India.
Information is available within a short time.
The Indian middle class in educated and skilled and the world has become a global village.

For older priests is it very difficult for example in Germany to cope with a secular society and the same process Europe underwent (secular societies) will occur in India even one day in the country (villages, smaller cities).

And the 20 young deacons will face that process step by step in the coming years therefore is it so important that they read the Bible daily in the morning, say mass, pray and worship and meditate.

A strong faith will help them to overcome serious problems in their life. They need strength and convictions because they dedicated their life to Jesus.
They have chosen a wonderful way of life to serve and to fulfil the spiritual needs of believers.
They are not only priests, they are human beings like you and me. They need the prayers and support of believers for their everyday life as priests.
Five ordained deacons belong to the diocese of Mangalore.
Dear young deacons do never forget the needy and the poorest of the poor that is very important.
It is a great day for the diocese of Mangalore.

    Best regards
