Mangalore: SAC Student Row - ABVP Demands Fresh Certificate, College Declines

Mangalore, Jun 20: The activists of district Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) staged a protest demanding new conduct certificate for Bindu Madhav Tilak, a former student of St Aloysius PU College, whose character was earlier termed by the College as 'unsatisfactory'.
They also demanded justice for MCMS students who were allegedly given courses that do not have approval from Mangalore University, and also, withdrawal of the College's autonomy.
ABVP activists blocked the entrance of St Aloysius PU College shouting slogans against 'the indifferent behavior of the management with no consideration to the future of the students', at in Kodialbail here on June 20.
The agitators raised their voice against the Ccollege for misjudging former student Bindu Madhav Tilak, declaring him as ‘unsatisfactory’ in the conduct certificate. "As he was an ABVP activist and had taken part in an anti-corruption protest of Anna Hazare in 2011 against the orders of the College, the management took action by giving him negative remarks in the conduct certificate,' said Ramesh K, state secretary of ABVP, adding that a fresh certificate should be given to Tilak.
He also said that the College had introduced MCMS course without approbal from Mangalore university. "Consequently, the students of 2008-09 batch have not been given convocation certificates to this day," he said.
"There are many instances wherein the College has taken the law and life of the students for granted. Therefore the autonomous status of the College should be immediately revoked," he demanded.
ABVP claim false, misleading: College
Speaking to Daijiworld, John E D'Silva, the then principal of St Aloysius College, denied ABVP's claims and said that the ‘unsatisfactory’ tag on Bindu Madhav Tilak was not because he was involved in the Anna Hazare movement.
"There were several other students who too were part of the anti-corruption protest, but they were not given such remarks. Just to mislead the people, they have used the Anna Hazare campaign as an excuse to demand a better conduct certificate," he said.
'Throughout the year, the College had given opportunities to Bindu Madhav Tilak to change his behaviour and conduct, but he did not pay heed. We also informed his mother, but she could not control him," he said.
"Tilak was involved in anti-social activities, fostering groupism, indulging in eve teasing and sensitive communal issues. I regret not dismissing him those days, and instead letting him stay with a hope that he would change. We will stand by our action and no fresh certificate would be issued," John D’Silva said.
