The Mangalorean Catholic Centre of the Parish (MCCP – Sts Peter and Paul Church – Ruwi) organized the preliminary rounds of the third season of Gulf Voice of Mangalore 2012, a talent hunt show for the Konkani speaking community that is spread all over the Middle East, on Thursday June 22 at Sts Peter and Paul Church main hall.

The Gulf Voice of Mangalore singing competition is considered to be one of the most popular and top rated talent show in the history of Konkani music, a brainchild of Lawrence Pinto and Louis Rodrigues from Kuwait, was first conducted in Kuwait in 2008 under the banner 'Youth Recreation Club Kuwait'.

This year’s preliminary round competition of Oman Region commenced with a welcome note by well known Konkani activist of Holy Spirit Church, Ghala and program organizer Lavina D'Sa followed by a prayer by Fr Wilson Rumeo, the spiritual director of the Konkani community and the assistant parish priest of Sts Peter and Paul Church, Ruwi Stanley T H Fernandes, (known as Dattu for everyone in Muscat), the charismatic president of MCCP, welcomed the audience, judges and participants.

Lawrence Alva, MCCP’s vice-president, cultural, spiritual and community services committee, introduced the eminent panel of judges of the competition. The judges of the competition were – Antony Bernard Martis, current resident of Sharjah, a brilliant musician and accomplished choir master of many church choirs in India and UAE, achiever of the highest grade (8th grade) certification in piano, Monica Valder, an elegant singer from Dubai who is hailing from Loretto Parish, Mangalore diocese, a lead singer and owner of ‘Simple’ music band of Dubai. She has an excellent flair of mesmerizing the audience with her gorgeous voice and ability to sing in many languages like Spanish, Italian, Sri Lankan etc and Edwin Arun Carlo, a recognized musician of Agrar parish, currently residing in Dubai. He is leading a famous band in UAE under the banner – “Sweet Melodies”. Carlo is a celebrated arranger and choir master of great finesse. All the judges were welcomed and presented with the floral bouquets.

Prescilla Menezes, general secretary of MCCP, presented the rules of the competition. The complete control of the competition including the monitoring of timing was perfectly executed by Lavina DSa and Ophilia Lazarus.

Before the announcement of the results, Ivan Moras, current cultural secretary proposed the vote of thanks. The winners of both categories were announced by Lavina DSa and the certificates of participation were presented by Donald Pinto and Suraj Rebello, members of the core team of MCCP.

One of the judges, Monica Valdar presented a beautiful song in Konkani which was loved by the audience

The judges were also honored and presented with mementos by Stanley Fernandes. As customary in MCCP, dinner was served to the audience.

    To qualify to be next GVOM auditions Judge, you need to sing as contestant, not be qualified in spite of being a good singer, work hard, sing in albums, be a popular performer, Be part of a successful band and the be chosen ( NOT ASK TO BE) by the GVOM organisers. YOU HAVE 2 YEARS NOW DEAR, WORK HARD AND YOU WILL RECEIVE. !

    I am not a singer as such but I too have sung for all India Radio from my school for yuvavani in 1986!!! Can I become a judge for next gvom please?

    To add to Godwin, Mangalore's comment, Mr Prem, how can a person judge a singer on the basis of failure to qualify in one competition? Did anyone tell you about what she has achieved after that? Do you know about 'Simple' band, a program called 'Desert Flowers' for budding singers on Namma TV?

    hey Prem D'souza/Robert, why are you jealous of that judge? as far I know, she doesn't need your certificate for her singing.. she is in this field from her young age and she was All India Radio artist too. First study well and then comment. Some of the Mangaloreans are so jealous when a lady achieve higher goals in life. Grown up dude

    Congratulations to all the winners, but i was surprised to see one Judge, i was learned that respected judge have failed in GVM preliminary round in UAE and just a normal singer inviting her for such big event like this is surprise for me. Otherwise well organised program.
