Mangalore, Jun 24: Kalakulotsav, a two day Konkani drama festival conducted by `Mandd' theatre group of Mandd Sobhann, commenced here at the Don Bosco Hall, Mangalore on Saturday, June 23.

`Eksuri Bayl' an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's Bengali drama `Nashttaneedd' was enacted.

Inaugurating the festival, Hulugappa Kattimani of Rangayana, said that theatre is the best medium of creative work which can relate to the masses. Unlike literature and other forms of art, where the production process revolves around one person most of the time, theatre involves a lot of experienced people in various fields like acting, direction, lighting, make-up, music and without audience a drama cannot be played. It's a group activity and there is no alternative for it.

Stany Alvares, president, Mandd Sobhann and Arun Raj Rodrigues, playwright were present during the inauguration.

The festival will continue on Sunday, June 24 and two plays will be enacted by the Mandd group.

The first play will be `Asallo Eklo Chafra' - a play based on the three plays `Magirchem Magir', `Shirigundi Shimanv' and `Dakter Dusman' written by the late playwright C F DCosta.  The final play is `Tulsi', which is based on a short story written by Gyanpeeth Awardee the late Ravindra Kelekar, Goa.

All these plays have been written by Arun Raj Rodrigues and directed by Christopher D'Souza, a product of Ninasam, Heggodu.

Roshni Goveas, Mitchell Crasta, Sunil Anton Siddi, Melwyn Pais, Rivin Crasta, Veeran Veigas, Anil DSouza, Jayaprakash DSouza,, Rayan Lobo, Darryl DSouza, Nelvita Noronha, Joyline Monis and Christopher DSouza have portrayed different characters in this play.

Kalakul is a Konkani drama repertoire founded by Mandd Sobhann, which has produced 20 plays and one street play.  140 shows of these plays have been presented in Mangalore, Bangalore and Goa so far.
