Udupi, Jun 24: If Yakshagana could get the same recognition as Kathakali, it would become a national art, said Mangalore University registrar Dr K Chinnappa Gowda.

Dr Chinnappa was speaking after inaugurating folk arts programme held during Govinda Vaibhava at Rajangann, Sri Krishna Math here on Sunday June 24.

"Yakshagana has the potential to become a national folk art. Veteran artiste Govind Bhat's 60 years of contribution to Yakshagana indeed exemplifies his professional excellence. He is an inspiration to the new generation of artistes," said Dr Chinnappa.

Hiranya Venkatesh Bhat, Sunnambala Vishveshwar Bhat and Krishnamurti Kavattar delivered lectures on Govind Bhat.

K Umakant Bhat presided over the programame.

Govind Bhat along with Sabbanakodi Rama Bhat, Divana Shivashankar Bhat and Satish Karkal held live demonstrations of different forms of folk art.

During the seven-day Govind Vaibhava, financial help was extended to senior Yakshagana artistes.

As a kid I enjoyed the Yakshagana plays ver well, remember watching it the whole night and try sleeping in the class.  I feel Yakshagana should be supported and at the same time I feel it need to be adapted to the changing modern scenario.
