Bangalore: Crisis Deepens in BJP, 8 Ministers Including Shettar, Renukacharya Quit

Bangalore, Jun 29 (IANS): In fresh trouble for Karnataka's BJP government, eight ministers, loyal to scam-hit former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, quit Friday to pressure the party leadership to remove Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda. Two more are likely to follow suit.

The ministers are Jagadish Shettar (rural development), C.M. Udasi(public works), Murugesh Nirani (industries), V. Somanna (housing), Umesh Katti (agriculture), Basavaraj Bommai (water resources), Revu Naik Belamagi (libraries and animal husbandry), and M.P. Renukacharya (excise).

Gowda received the resignation letters and told the ministers that the decision on them will be taken by the party high command, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sources said.

Two more Yeddyurappa loyalist ministers, Shobha Karandlaje (power) and Raju Gowda (small scale industries), are also expected to meet Gowda later and submit their resignations.

In New Delhi, BJP general secretary in charge of Karnataka affairs Dharmendra Pradhan said, "The leadership is in touch with all important Karnataka leaders".

"We are hopeful the crisis will be resolved soon," he said.

In Bangalore, Udasi justified the move to quit the ministry. "For several months there were differences between the chief minister and several ministers. Since there was no resolution of this issue, we have quit."

"We waited all these days for decision of our high command. We cannot wait any longer," he said after the eight met Gowda here and gave him the letters of resignation.

"Our demand is to make Jagadish Shettar the chief minister. We are hopeful that the party leaders will accept it," added Udasi.

If the BJP high command does not act on the resignation letters, several lawmakers loyal to Yeddyurappa may also quit to keep the pressure up for Gowda's removal.

"Next step is resignation by legislators loyal to Yeddyurappa," B.P. Harish, a staunch follower of the former chief minister, told reporters.

The eight ministers and several lawmakers met Yeddyurappa late Friday to decide their next steps in their campaign for leadership change in the state.

The Karnataka development is bound to severely embarrass the BJP as it comes ahead of next month's presidential poll, where the party is backing former Lok Sabha speaker P.A. Sangma against the ruling United Progressive Alliance candidate, former finance minister Pranab Mukherjee.

The party may be left red-faced if it does not solve the crisis before the voting scheduled for July 19 as there is every possibility of the dissidents in Karnataka voting for Mukherjee.

Early this month the BJP was left embarrassed as 12 party lawmakers voted for an Independent candidate in the polls to the legislative council.

Yeddyurappa and his group are pushing for Shettar to replace Gowda. This strategy was adopted after Yeddyurappa failed to convince BJP national leaders to again make him the chief minister, in spite of around a dozen corruption and illegal cases against him in Karnataka courts.

He lost all hopes after the Central Bureau of Investigation started its probe into mining bribery charges against him on the direction of the Supreme Court.

The BJP came to power for the first time in Karnataka in May 2008 with Yeddyurappa as chief minister. He quit July last year over mining bribery charges and Gowda took over Aug 4.

The four-year BJP rule has been marred by scams and dissidence. Around 20 of the 120 BJP lawmakers, including Yeddyurappa, in the 225-member assembly, are fighting corruption and illegal land deal cases.

Assembly elections are due May next year. There is speculation that the polls may be advanced to December this year in view of the unending problems faced by the ruling BJP.

Bangalore: Ten Ministers to Resign, Claims Yeddyurappa Loyalist MLA

Bangalore, Jun 29 (PTI): Upping the ante, the B S Yeddyurappa faction in the ruling BJP today threatened resignation by 10 ministers as the demand for replacing Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda gathered pace.

Yeddyurappa loyalist and MLA B P Harish claimed the 10 ministers, including Umesh Katti, Murugesh Nirani, C M Udasi and M P Renukacharya, would hand over their resignation letters to Gowda this evening.

"Ten ministers will resign this evening. Our decision is steadfast," he told reporters, adding, the Yeddyurappa faction is demanding convening of a legislature party meeting and change of leadership if "it has more strength".

The faction demanded that the party's central leadership take a call on their demand today itself, saying their patience was running out and they can't wait any longer.

The central leadership has let it be known there is no question of change of leadership at least till the Presidential elections are over (July 19).

Ministers loyal to Yeddyurappa today held strategy meetings at the residence of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Jagadish Shettar, who is the faction's nominee to replace Gowda.

In-charge of the party's Karnataka Affairs, Dharmendra Pradhan said in New Delhi that there is no question of replacing Gowda for now as he is "doing a good job".

BJP state unit chief K S Eshwarappa admitted that while one group of MLAs has demanding Gowda's replacement, the other is against such a move.

Good comment. yes, I agree option 1 is appropriate and suitable with the way things are moving.

Many honest and clean image people will join DVS who can easily win next election with option 1 to provide effiecent and clean adminstartion.

There will be lot of help to DVS if he himself leaves the communal party and join many like minded and able people.

Once DVS is free from Yeddi clutches, he may able to speak up and smile lot better than today. His smile has been fading lately, which is not a good sign.

He should have realised Yeddy is a fox in politics. Time and again DVS only promised to cut VAT on petrol. What is the use of conducting GIM if your own Industries minister is a dissident? Now he will become "na ghar ka na ghat ka". Anchid MP seat ittinala pond.

Selflessness, party discipline and service to people is a thing of the past. Groupism and vested interests drive the politics of the day. What choice do we have? nothing. States are under individual's charisma and polularity, national leadership is disintegrating, Charismatic leader of the National stature is missing, Advani is fast deppreciating, Narendra Modi can never lead the Nation not because he is not capable but because of his autocratic and militant background.

We can not leave the Nation fragile for too long, the only credible leadership can come from Rahul Gandhi, again not for his merit and competency but because he is the only force which can keep the flock together for some time until a credit leader emerges either from the UPA or from NDA or from the so called third front. Per BJP leaders and followers, these are small internal problems and to show other parties thier unity (possibly trust in the party leadership).

What a MESS these people have created in last four years.

There is an opportunity to someone to write a book on the events of last four years in State admisntartion and all political parties in the state.

If someone is intrested, we can provide the research and supporting materials for the book. To start with obtain a copy of so called development efforts listed in the BJP party released this week. Just the check the facts, I can bet you most of them may be just propganda and no implementation.

BJP should kick out Yeddy/Reddy and his chelas. They are hindrance to Sadananda Gowda. These crooks from North Karnataka won't allow Gowda to work peacefully. Only two options left for Gowda:
    1. Come out of BJP with his supporter's who have clean image and who care for the people and form a regional party which is secular and work for the people. And definitely people of Karnataka will vote for Sadananda Gowda's party as people are fed up of Congress/Janata Dal/BJP.
    2. Resign as CM and accept the BJP Highcommand orders.
First option seems to be more appropriate as BJP highcommand is useless and they are scared to take action against Yeddy. They should look at the Congress Highcommand decision on Jagan Mohan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh. BJP should realise that chair, power and high position is temporary but people's love is permanent.

BJP's (DVS?)count down started from today?

Why DVS fighting loosing battle as BSY's men are outnumbered DVS.Therefore,to uphold democratical principles and precedent gracefully DVS should give a serious thought to step down.Mangalorean CMs are destined for a year tenure only...The other instance was EX-CM, M Veerappa Moily.

I am very much disgusted and dejected to read and digest the sad daily affairs/news of BJP ruling party in Karnataka that too within the power hungry party members. When the government headed by Mr.Sadananda Gowda is running very smoothly without any complaints why the hell they need abrupt leadership change?Does BJP belongs to any particular segment of the society or caste, religion? It is a national party belongs to each and every person of the country those who want to be in the party. Why this hullobullo. Is it not they are wasting public money and their precious time, energy by indulging in unwanted issues like this.Instead of wasting their time why can't they struggle for strengthening the party, build party image and do some constructive works for the development/benefit of the Karnataka people?.Because of this petty issues they spoiled the name and fame of entire karnataka and people. They are quarelling like small kids at public's cost and fund.Shame on you guys. This shows your true colour. You are not working for the prosperity of the state, you are working for your own gain.Selfish people.Uncultured,uneducated.

    People,

Same circus happened when late SR Bommai was Janata Party CM, revolt was led by late Jeevaraj Alva and a bunch of MLAs if I remember correctetly by a guy named Ambadagatti.

None of them won next election, and CONgress came back to power.

If these folks want it that way again,,, so be it, this is nothing new to these folks.

Shobhakka will take permanent retirement at her new coffee estate at Kodagu.

    Jai Hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

This is not the first time these minsters will be submitting their resignation.
Feel sorry for DVS, everyday headline is negative and these issues takes time for follow-up and corrective actions. Wish he had continued as MP and not involved with these issues.
DVS continues with 20 ministerial portfolios with no development in sight. Who knows who is in charge of administrative responsibilities in any of these ministries and related activities to provide service to common man. This is where normally corruption will be high in absence of clear oversight and lack of administration.
Hope people of Karntaka deserve better administration and need HONEST people, regardless of party affiliations, who can meet their needs and not selfish corrupt people who are in power these days.
