Mangalore: Popular Konkani Novelist Jerry Kulshekar No More

Mangalore, Jul 6: Konkani novelist John Salvadore D'Silva, popularly known as Jerry Kulshekar passed away at a private hospital here on Friday July 6. He is survived by his wife Benilda and four children Sunil, Shaila, Canil and Buela.

Recipient of the prestigious Daiji Dubai Award in the year 2004, Jerry Kulshekar was born on May 16, 1939 in Cordel, near Kulshekar. He started writing in Konkani at the age of 16. He has penned more than 50 novels in Konkani and approximately 800 short stories.

In his youth, he worked in coffee estates and later worked in Doha-Qatar for many years. 'Kitya Roddtai', 'Taka Mhojer Mog Asallo', 'Raitaracheo Shintryo', 'Niradhari Moly'. 'Dubllo Lekhak', 'Desvatt', 'Zolma Sandesh', 'Cynthicheo Shintryo' are some of his famous novels.

He won the Goa Konkani Bhasha Mandal award in the year 1985 for his novel 'Zolma Sandesh'. In the year 1992, he was conferred the prestigious Dr TMA Pai Foundation best book award for his novel 'Gharacho Divo'. He also won several prizes in novel writing competitions conducted by the Konkani periodicals Raknno, Poinnari, Kannik and Mithr.

A legend who has inspired a whole generation with his brilliant literary work is now no more...We admired him for his outstanding yet simple contributions through various medias in our growing days and we always felt that he ranks among the highest calibrre of Konkany men of literature like CGS, Dolphy Cascia Lobo, or even Kodop (the Late VJP Saldanha),late Cha Fra and others.

I do hope philanthropists of the community join together and work out some measures to commemorate and honour this great man....measures like establish a scholarship for deserving students, or annual awards for 'articles writing in Konkany' or any other ways to commemorate this great but truly humble man and his legacy.

Recalling the happy times we spent together, We take this opportunity to convey our family's condolences to Sunilbaab and all the family members....and pray that Jerrybab's soul May Rest in Peace at the Almighty's feet.....!!!!

Such a clean fabulous konkani novelist my favorite for sure as I never left a single books of him reading through is no more. God is wonderful took him to his right hand place. Met him in person in his house 2 decades back and I had fallen in love for his kindest advises.

Sad to hear about the untimely passing away of Jerry Kulshekar, one of the great Konkani writers of our times. His contribution towards Konkani literature is great and his untimely death is a great lose to Konkani literature.
