Mangalore, Jul 7: The two-day 'Tulunada Krishi Janapadhotsava', organized by Tulunada Kesaru Gadde Kreedostava Samiti to promote the traditional games of Tulunadu was inaugurated at Sri Subramanya Temple, Kesaru Gadde, Pavanje, Mulky on July 7.

Speaking after the inaugural, Sri K S Nithyananda Swami of Veda Vijnan Mandir, Chikmagalur said, "Modern technology has fecilitated invention of new products, but ultimately, it cannot produce the basic necessity for survival, that is foodgrains."

"This (producing foodgrains) has to be done by the farmer alone. Therefore, a lot of importance was given to agriculture in the past. However, presently only 5 percent of the population is engaged in agriculture, as against 65 percent during the pre-independence era," he said.

Lauding the management for bringing up folk activities, he requested that apart from the desire to get into software companies and industries, the younger generation should also develop special interest in agriculture.

Narasihma Pai, convener, Vyasa Maharshi Vidhya Peeta, Mulky, and Niranjan Bhat, trustee, Jnanashakthi Subramanian Temple, Pavanje, Jaya Shetty, agriculturist, Thokoor, and Pitambar Shettygar were among others present at the event.

P B Hegde, president, Tulunada Kesaru Gadde Kreedostava Samithi, welcomed the dignitaries and the crowd. Vinod S Salian compered the programme.

The two-day long event consists of wrestling, football, race in the slushy mud, tug-of-war, sprinting, backwards run, and other rural sporting competitions. Essay writing too was part of the competition, based on the theme of rural development.

Really this event has brought back my childhood memories.Organizing such events are really praiseworthy and laudable. But who bothers nowadays. For the young generation it is like organizing recreation center, outing place or some sports events.Organizers can highlight many things but the bottom line or result is zero and of no use.I am sure even organizer's children may not agree or uphold our olden culture. In materialistic world, there is no place for our old rich tulunaada culture. However I appreciate and congratulate the members of Tulunaada krishi Janapadhotsava committee.God bless all of you.

"Modern technology has facilitated invention of new products, but ultimately, it cannot produce the basic necessity for survival, that is food grains." - How shallow the words are. As we all understand technology helps us produce more and better products. That it does even in agricultural field. It is an aberration to think that our ancestors were playing volley-ball or races in the "kesaru gadde". Lets try to be true to our roots.
