Udupi, Jul 9:
City police on Monday July 9 made a significant breakthrough in the recent murder of 75-year-old Radhu Karkera at Ammunje by arresting the key accused from Santekatte.

The arrested has been identified as 32-year-old Annappa Poojary, son of Eshwara, a resident of Nayampalli, Santekatte.

Karkera had settled down in Ammunje, Tenkabettu, Uppoor, five years ago after moving from Mumbai. She lived alone and her son Gopal, who was living in the neighbourhood, used to bring her food and medicines. Gopal found his mother murdered when he arrived to enquire about her health and her needs at around 4 pm on July 3.

Police sources said that Poojary confessed that he had masterminded the murder of Karkera for her jewellery. He was hired to chop the tree branches on her property, a few days before the heinous crime. Pojary, along with an accomplice arrived at Karkera’s house on the afternoon of that fateful day and strangled her to death. The police have intensified the search for Poojary’s accomplice who is absconding since then.

The investigating team led by Prabhudev Mane, along with Brahmavar circle inspector D T Prabhu, probationary sub-inspector Rohini Patil, assistant sub-inspector Balakrishna, head constables Pusha, Shailesh, and Ravi Kumar, police constable Satish, Brahmavar sub-inspector Girish Kumar, probationary sub-inspector Manju, DySP crime squad head constables Ravichandra and Sudesh, police constables Sudheer, Krishnaprasad, Nagesh and Khader, carried out the investigations directed by SP Boralingaiah and ASP M V Venkateshappa.

The police said that the duo stole a 30 gm gold chain with pendant, 6 gm gold earrings and two gold bangles weighing 18 gm each which were worn by Karkera. The police recovered gold chains weighing 33 gm from Poojary’s house. He will be produced in court shortly.

SP Borelingaiah announced a cash reward of Rs 20,000 to the police team for the breakthrough in the case within five days of the heinous crime.

This is good team effort and success by the Udupi police force. Taking the circumstances and happenings of previous days and before that and putting the links together has helped them to solve the mystery......Poojary could have taken the gold,, why killed her....Must have been an alcoholic...

Mr Rakesh Shetty, Mangalore What do your fellow members in the social groups do? It's only the police who respond on time sometimes. Your fellow mates are just good to protect the cows/buffaloes. They are not here to protect humans.

Well done police team. We expect a similar action in every case.
