Mangalore, Jul 13: The officials of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) on Friday July 13 continued their raid on hotels and hostels across the city in a bid to check on cleanliness and hygiene in them.

As many as four hotels in Hampankatta and three hostels accomodations in the city were raided.

While Shanthi Sagar hotel was asked to close down immediately, three hotels - Sagar, Suvarna and Pereira -  were given notices to maintain cleanliness in and around their premises.

Shanthi Sagar was sealed for not maintaing hygiene and cleanliness on the floors, kitchen and surrounding. The owners protested but to no avail. In addition, an fine of Rs 5,000 was imposed on the owners, and they were given notice to rectify the violations within seven days. The hotel would be allowed to function only if the guidelines are followed strictly, one of the MCC officials said.

Two of Expert PU science ladies hostels and Shri Sai ladies hostel near SDM College were also raided. However, the MCC inspectors did not find any negligence on the managements' part.

The raid was carried out under the direction of Dr Harish Kumar, commissioner, Madhu, environment inspector, SN Bhat, health officer, Santhosh, Sushanth, Babu Mallanna and others of the MCC.

Good Job by MCC staff, you should raid every 6 month so that these hotels can maintain clean/hygiene, in-case if they didn't maintain, you should fine Rs 50000/- on spot the same it happend in the UAE, so these hotel always keep clean to avoid fine and cancellation of license

Dear Commissioner Dr.Harish thank you for your efforts to provide us clean food. Keep up the good work and enter more food places and shut them down if necessary. We will rather go little hungry than eat this filthy rubbish.
Mr Madhu Manohar, very special thanks to you because you and Mr Manjunath Shetty are doing great job Honestly. This City needs your kind of officers to handle these lawless, filthy people.
Now may I request the following favor. Since the days of Mr. Manjaya Shetty (atleast 5 years) I have been requesting the health department to inspect the drinking water tankers and check the wells from where they pump. Random samples of water should be taken for spot check on quality such as Bacteria count and turbidity, plus any fecal contamination. There are some wells close to creeks in which SEWER water is flowing near Kadri Kambla. Naturally when Well water is pumped out,the vacuum created fills with surrounding water from creeks. Beside that the ground around these wells is saturated by the creek water.
Second point is, the hose they use to pump water is thrown in filth and then used for pumping. Also these filthy hoses are lowered into Customer's water tank. This water supply should be controlled too because it is part of the food dept.

I am surprised that the way these reports are given to the readers such as raided, it is not the raid. These visits should be part of regular inspection by the health officers, food inspectors or DHO or any other officials. These post or people are entrusted to do that and paid for it by the Govt. Unfortunately, in India either people may not follow the regulations or most of them are not aware of it. Same in case of business people, busy in making money. Awareness should be created among the public about the quality, quantity, health and hygiene, sanitation, traffic rules by these officials apart from their regular inspection. It is mandatory in Gulf countries all the hotel employees should be immunized in every six months. We may not heard about this in India. We are so reluctant that we never abide with the law of our own land.

Seeing the pictures above, showing the filth, the only consolation for the hotel/restaurant goers is in the words of Jesus who said, the external dirt will not affect you, but the dirt from inside will.

However, only those who are in the food business will understand the actual problems in keeping the kitchen & premises clean. It is not as easy as raiding the premesis & asking the owners to keep things clean.

It should be a complete change of infrastructure & changes in the thinking of the management (if there is any), towards cleanliness.

    1. Replace existing kitchen furniture with aluminium/stainless steel
    2. Replace decade old Kitchen equipemnt with professional catering equipment.
3.Wall to wall glazed tiles is a must.
    4. Trimming the nails/prevention of hair/sweat fall/ in food, keeping the flies/cats/dogs from entering the kitchen and eating places
    5. Medical certification to kitchen staff, regarding their health status
    6. Prevention of purchasing expired/near to expire ingredients to cut cost.
    7. Prevention of using sweaty/soiled bare hands to handle/mix food.
    8. proper storage facilities to store food ingredients from getting expired due to heat etc.
    9. Kitchen to be situated in a way, visible to the customers.
    10. Using food grade chemicals to clean food related equipment

11.There are no professional cleaning staff except in star hotels, we see minor boys with dirty linnen clearing/cleaning the customer tables. Hardly anyone cleaning the Kitchen.

These are only a very few of the many cleaning requiremnts required of d food industry, which tell that keeping the food places clean is next to impossible, unless d MCC staff puts in place, a system where by the hotel managements will not have any way to compramise.

Since d MCC have made a good beging, d people should also join them in identifying, the dirty places of food pepearations, and start a new era of cleanilines in Mangalore, & not wait for d inspectors to raid the premises to know the filthy truth.

Swaaamii...Keep on raiding hotels and hostels will do nothing. Kindly reveal what actions have been taken on those who were already fined and had closed the shutters following the raid in last month. Some strongs sources say that despite fines, all the licenses were returned back without any further word, the same evening. Why? So no action? How much the officials are bribed?

I have seen same MCC officials who went for the ride taking food some days before in some of the raided hotel. But MCC is doing good job.But this type ride must done once in a month. And repeatedly do the same hotel regularly. Then hotel owners will learn a lesson.

I have seen health Inspectors visiting hotels for inspection on many occations. I dont know what sought of inspections they were doing so far.

It is good that they alerted finally by conducting raids. IT IS ALSO UNDERSTOOD AS THE UNEXPECTED RAIDS ONLY ON THOSE WHO DID NOT ENTERTAINED THEM HOW THE INSPECTORS WANTED.

NONE OF THE HOTELS IN MANGALORE IS CAPABLE OF RUNNING BUSINESS IF HIGENE MATTERS. LET THEM START FROM MCC CANTEEN AND REACH THE HIGHEST LEVELLED HOTELS OR RESTAURANTS. NONE OF THEM ARE 100% CLEAR.

LET THEM HAVE A LOOK AT FISH MARKET, VEGETABLE MARKET OR MEAT MARKET FIRST AND UNDERSTAND HOW THE EATABLES ARE STORED OR DISPLAYED.

I SAW THE PICTURES OF LABOUR CAMPS OF A CONSTRUCTION SITE WHERE HEALTH INSPECTORS RAIDED WITH A REMARK SAYING THERE WAS DRAIN WATER STORED ON THEIR PREMISES WHICH IS THE REASON FOR MOSQUITOS AND MALARIA...

LET THE OFFICIALS INSPECT THE GUTTER NEXT TO FISH MARKET AT STAE BANK ARED , FOOT PATH AT JYOTHI BUS STOP, OPP. GANESH MEDICALS KANKANADI.

THESE ARE FEW PLACES OUT OF HUNDREDS IN THE MCC LIMITS. WHY ARE THESE HEALTH INSPECTORS BOTHER TO CLEAR THESE ?

MONEY MATTERS EVERYWHERE. POORS ARE THE SUFFERERS.
