Puttur: Scarf Row at Ramakunjeshwar College - Students Protest

Puttur, Jul 13: Muslim students of Ramakunjeshwar College, near Uppinangady, staged a protest outside the college on Friday July 13, urging the authorities to allow them to wear scarves to cover their heads.

The students also boycotted classes on Thursday July 12 against the ban on wearing scarfs inside the college campus.

Speaking to the media, the students said that they presented a memorandum to their College principal 15 days ago seeking permission to wear 'hijab' on the college campus. As the college authorities have not taken any decision in this regard so far, the students have boycotted classes and will continue to do so till their demands are met.

The principal said that a decision in this regard will be taken after discussing the issue with the managing committee and the parents of students. “The issue has been earlier discussed with the parents of students and it’s up to the management to decide their stance,” informed the principal.

Ramakunjeshwar Pre-University College principal Satish Bhat and Sanskrit lecturer Narayan Bhat tried to convince the agitating students to attend the classes and the students were firm that they will attend the classes only with the scarf. The students alleged that their religious practices demand that they wear scarfs in public places and sought justice for their cause. The students continued their protest despite the scorching sun.

I just dont understand why people are creating an issue of such a small matter. Every school / college has a dress code and the same has to be followed. If they dont want to follow then they should find a school / college where there is no dress code. India is developing country. We have to move ahead. In metros we do not find such issues coming up in schools / colleges. This matter has to be clearly sorted out and if possible talks can also be had with senior religious leaders to take their opinion if it is mandatory for girls to wear scarf. if it is not mandatory then students should attend the classes and clear their exam rather than wasting time on boycott. This will unnecessarily create a problem for their future. They may also loose one precious year of their studies. Think and then Act is what i want to say here

What is the dress code in India? More and more stripping?. Go to Rural Rajastan ans Haryana and see your Hindu Sisters dress code and then comment.I am living in Sindhi Colony of Fraser town Bangalore. Even the daughter - in - laws (modern) have to cover their head in front of their elders. Do not make issues out of nothing. Try to live in harmony. These Muslim girls covering their head have not done any dent to anybody's image. It is only the handwork of some RSS creatures to devide the society.

    Sankaranarayan Aiyar/Rameshwaram,

YOu have a thread around your shoulder to prove your superior caste. Keep this dirty ideology to your home and siblings.

India is not your forefathers personal property. It belongs to every Indian be it a hindu, muslim, sikh, christian. Ours is a secular country. You dont allow any muslim person inside your home, that your personal, but these colleges dont belong to you threaded communities. Its India and it belongs to us as much as it belongs to you. What right you enjoy being an Indian, we do have the same rights..

Nobody can deny our rights...Forget about making India a hindu nation...you even cant think about it. We have sacrificed our lives to this nation and we are proud to do it.

Recall the first war of independence was started by sepoy mutinty by hindu and muslim soldiers in 1857 and in 1757 again its muslims who revolted against british.

In the name of freedom of speech you dont have right to abuse other religion. Why you people have protested against the screeing of kataraveera. For u people have feelings and sentiments and others dont have. Stop attacking churches and masjids if you wish to have peaceful and secular society. Dont ever instigate others.

I cannot understand what is the problem if muslim female students wear Scarf in the school.Does it go against the dress code of the school.? Even during my college days we had Muslim female students studying in the college, wearing scarf. Why educated people of Mangalore are bringing religion everywhere including schools.? We are living in a society and we need to respect others religion and privacy as long as it is not harming anyone.

After going through the news, it is clear that the school has banned wearing scarf to the school. I dont think there is any merit in these students agitation. Since they knew very well that scarf is not allowed in this particular school. I feel these students are unnecesarily getting their relegion in the school campus and shall be expelled without any consideration, if the school has made it clear to them during admission. Although I do not think wearing a scarf should be banned...!!! Whatever it is the rule has to be followed and not relegion in the educational institutions.

Color/their forehead colored with three white strips/sikh student coming with the turban will the managment take any action against them.

Why when itcomes to muslim wearing a scarf it hurts every one.Basically under BJP rule they want to destroy all secular fabric of the society. They can survive only on these issues only.I dont understand why these issues are coming during BJP Ruling time.I have seen students wearing Scarf/Burga since my childhood and there was no issue about it.Its all politcally motivated to Keep Muslims away from education.Imposing your ideology forcibly on others, which will not work

These Muslims females not just started wearing a hijab in 2012 at school. We had classmates with hijab but none of the students or authorities had any objection. Neither any boy came with head bands to protest this. But now all of a sudden you want to divide them in the school so that you can divide them in the society. India is a Secular country , where every person has the right to preach, practice and propagate any religion they choose. A scarf did not violate school's dress code, and hence, the school's direction was violation of the student's fundamental right of freedom of conscience and professing and practicing their religion.

In a verdict of Mumbai High Court in 2002, court mentioned if a Muslim girl studying in a Girls school where there are no boys, then it’s not necessary to wear scarf. Last month Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan (KVS) in Alahabad, which have history of 50 years has introduced changes in the dress code of students and now Muslims students can wear Scarf and also Sikh students can wear Turban.

In Ramakunja case it’s a school with co-education of Boys and Girl’s. And also these students are not requesting for exemption from the school dress code. They want to wear scarf on top of the dress code mentioned by the school management. Seems there was no problem till now in other schools, only some schools are creating conflicts between religions by making big issues out of this.

Why only special rule in this college, there are hundreds of colleges in and around the state. The law should be uniform all over the state and not only for this school. Our prime minister, our president still practicing their religion in this secular country why can’t the students of this college?

Scarf row is a old subject, it goes round the world off and on in schools/offices/public places etc and not just at Ramakunjeshwar college.

As long as the students dont cover their faces, it is not necessary to make a big issue of it.

If the schools dont intend to entertain wearing of head scarf's inside the school premises, they should specify the same prior to admissions and not after admissions are done.

It is a strange and unprecedented news that Muslim female students going for a strike! That means there could more Muslim students(numbers) to go for a strike. My understanding is that dress code was already with college prospectus then how come the misunderstanding raked up now?I have no comments on that and the issue is between Muslim female students and management of Ramakungjeshwar College. One thing is still not clear why Pre-university and universities are not laid uniform dress code on educational institution which may help to sort it out like this issues.
