Mangalore, Jul 17: The district Congress led by KPCC secretary Ivan D'Souza on Tuesday July 17 raised their voice demanding better facilities at the city's passport office.

Holding a protest in front of the passport office in Kodialbail, Ivan D'Souza said that the office lacks basic facilities for the passport applicants.

"There are no facilities like seating arrangements, washroom, canteen, parking area etc, which are necessary as the applicants have to wait for hours to get their work done," he said.

"The staff at the passport centre are incompetent and do not have knowledge of computers. There is online system to apply for passport, but they are unable to guide the applicants," he said.

Ivan said that as basic facilities are lacking, the centre should be shifted to the taluk office or the DC's office premises.

"Every day, nearly 450 applicants come to the passport office, but they don't even have place to sit. Women and senior citizens are made to stand for hours in queues, many a time on the roadside," he said, adding that with better facilities, the number of applicants per day should be increased to 600.

He also demanded walk-in facility to apply for passport, apart from a helpline in the office to assist the applicants and the illiterate.

"A copy of our demands will be sent to union external affairs minister S M Krishna," he added.

When the protestors tried to gatecrash and enter the passport office, police took charge and stopped them. A minor clash erupted, after which the passport officials themselves came outside to address the protestors. They assured that their demands will be forwarded to the regional office and action will be taken accordingly.

Former mayors Shashidhar Hegde, Ashraf, secretary of district Congress T K Sudhir, corporator Gretta Rebello, Youth Congress leaders Mithun Rai, Praveenchandra Alva and others were present.

The facilities at the passport office is really good and upto the class. I had been there yesterday with appointment but unfortunately couldn't finish the procedures due to shortage of one original document. The computerised facility right from document verification, issuance of token to filing looked good. Mr Ivan, more importantly, the PSKs come under the Ministry of External Affairs so ask yourself which party holds that portfolio. Fight for issues that really benefit the common man,

Except that the place is small to handle too many applicants and does not have enough anemities like toilsts drinking water etc, mangalore passport office staff are much better and bit proffesional than any other govt office. I had gone there almost 5 times to apply for passport of 5 of our famuly members with all correct papers & I dint have any problem dealing with the people there. EVen the guy sitting inthe front desk was decently & patiently
answering some new peoples queries regarding the documents needed or the procedure etc. The staff who process papers work also do their best to finish work at a time & you dont see the situation which Govt offices are know for.
And for Congis protesting I guess they have smelt election and the drama started when Sri Janardhan Poojary did his oscar award winning performance in Holy Hill recently when some trouble makers threw stones there, Like Mr Prabhu said " Bele dhaanthina aachari... when city has so many problems instead of protestign against MCC or RTO, they have come here. May be someone in their because of someone in the group dint get his ECNR stamped because of pending cases and he went and complained to Ivan ji.

Facilities are better in Mangalore than other passport centres in Karnataka like at Marrathalli & Lalbagh in bangalore and at Hubli. I dont know why there is so much commotion. If you come at the appointed time after placing appointment online & carry proper ID and documents then there is no need to worry. I and my family have never faced a problem at Mangalore or Bangalore passport seva kendras. But Mr Ivan Dsouza should fight against corrupt officers at Kadri and Pandeshwar police station. They do not come home for verification, shout at youand ask for documents which are not needed and then say that there is some problm with documents and ask bribe to forward them verification to bangalore passport office. In case we dont pay, then they warn us that the passport will be delayed. Are you listening PC Harish?

I had been to the passport office in June for my renewal. I was surprised to see the wonderful set up there. Once you step inside, no facilities are lacking. Even a coffee shop is available. The staff who are all young and well mannered, are polite, helpful and very professional in their approach. When the counter staff who checked my papers found that I had not brought some documents, he gave me time to go home and come back with them the same day. I never expected to find such a fine government office in Mangalore.

For that matter, even when I was called to the police station for the police enquiry, I was pleasantly surprised to see very well mannered and helpful police staff, which was a sea change from what I experienced last time.

    Good day to all,
Acquiring a new / renewal passport is a very difficult procedure all over India (like getting a P.hd).
First, you will have to apply for the passport in the PP office with much difficulty.
Then you will have to wait for the Police clearance - which takes well above one to two months.
All in all, it may take more than 2-3 months for getting a new or renewed passport.
About facilities in the PP office, lesser you say is better. Facilities are zilch.
Whereas, In US / European embassies, there is a canteen, wash room, news papers, magazines etc.
Indian Politicians lay tall claims declaring that we are at par with western countries. However, it is sad to note that we have not made enough strides in that direction.

Here Some people write comments without knowing reality at PSK Mangalore (Passport Office)i had been to passport office last month
following are few fecility which are not there
1.People has to wait in long "Q" outside the passport office in sunlight or in rain but no shade or protaction from rain
2.there is no proper sitting arrangements to elderly people
    3. at first counter most of the staff don't know kannada language and even local langauges to read the kannada langauge thes ask someother staff even though they don't know which document is required or not
4.Out side the PSK there is no proper sitting arrangments and Canteen facility and even toilets
    5. At counter "B" the passport officer "a lady" is so arrogent and not smile on her face. she is treating like we are not from India.
    6. none of the staff even passport officer are not displaying their ID card with photo.
othere than these things rest is ok.

Mostly in all Government office the basic facilities must.Mainly, sittint facilities, toilet, drinking water, & canteen. When on person attends that office he should forget that his work would finish in a day. It may be one week or two weeks project, unless one put his hand deep in the pocket or purse until he gets pain. This is the usual working procedures in our Govt. offices.

I agree with Shaukath Ali of Riyadh, My experience in the Mangalore Passport office, when I visited In last October for my children's passport renewal. THERE IS STATE OF ART FACILITIES ARE THERE ONCE YOU GO INSIDE, LIKE SEPARATE WASHROOMS FOR LADIES AND GENTS, SEATING ARRANGMENTS, TOKEN SYSTEM BESIDES CO-OPERATIVE JUNIOR STAFFS AND CLEANING STAFFS. I HAD VISITED RIYADH/ JEDDAH & WORLI (MUMBAI) PASSPORT OFFICES DURING MY CAREER IN KSA. OUR MANGALORE IS LOT BETTER THAN ALL THESE PASSPORT OFFICES IN TERMS OF FACILITIES AND CO-OPERATION BY STAFF. WE CAN'T BRING ALL THINGS TOGETHER IN A SMALL AND CONGESTED CITY LIKE MANGALORE, LIKE WAITING FACILITIES OUTSIDE AND PARKING FACILITIES.

I THINK SOMEBODY HAS INNER INTEREST IN THIS PASSPORT BUILDING TO BE SHIFTED. IF THESE PEOPLE GOT TIME TO SPEND LIKE THIS, THEY HAVE OTHER PRIORITIES IN MANGALORE- PROPER TRAFFIC SIGNALLING SYSTEM- PUBLIC TOILETS - FOOTFOOTHS - SEWAGE SYSTEM - SO MANY.

I THINK A PERSON WHO VISITED THIS PASSPORT OFFICE, WILL FEEL THE DIFFERENCE. THERE IS VERY LESS SCOPE FOR BRIBE, VERY STRICT OFFICE. I WOULD SAY, WE MANGALOREANS ARE LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH OFFICE IN MANGALORE.

Ivan D'souza and other party workers has no work , their daily earning is from these protest, rasta roka etc etc for which they are paid..isn't it pity.So many years under CONGRESS rule they could have done our living better, unfortunately we are still in pathetic stage.

TRY THIS IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE: go yourself online and take a appointment and take all the necessory documents with you on the appointed day, And they will ask you for more documnet and you are end up coming back. If you go through any agent then they don't ask any additional documnet, you are paperwork will proceed smoothly. CURRUPTED PASSPORT OFFICE IN MANGALORE. AND PEOPLE INSIDE ARE SO RUDE IS UNREAL.
