Airport Authority to Build Cargo Terminal at Mangalore Airport

Bangalore, Jul 17: Civil Aviation minister Ajit Singh on Tuesday July 17 announced that the Airport Authority of India will be building a cargo terminal at Mangalore Airport for handling of international and domestic cargos, by modifying the old passenger terminal.

It may be recalled that the Federation of Indian Export Organization (Southern Region) and the Chambers of Commerce and Trade Associations in Karnataka, had jointly organized an exporters’ convention at Mangalore on February 13, 2012 titled Karnataka: Export Vision – 2020.  During deliberations at the Conference, one of the major concerns raised was the need for air cargo complex at Mangalore Airport with cold storage facilities for agro products.

Union corporate affairs minister Dr Veerappa Moily who was instrumental in initiating the 'Export Vision 2020' in Mangalore has taken up the issue with civil aviation minister Ajit Singh.

"Cold storage facilities will be provided with the assistance of M/s Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the same will be used for storage and processing of perishable cargo." Ajit Singh said in a press conference.

The airport must be upgraded, internatioanl and local airlines be given permission for flights, so that the agonizing monopoly of Air India Express be brought to an end and passengers will benefit from low fares.
Quality of services and facilities for passengers, tourists must improve.
Roads leading to and from the airport must be made to international standards too.
Priority must be given to safety of passengers and aircrafts too.

    Dear Mr. Ajith Singh,

First and foremost it is important to facilitate the hard working Mangaloreans from the gulf to come directly to their homeland with comfort. After slogging for one or two years and when you come back you have to sit like a cut out after paying a handsome amount in Air India Express and for 4 hours it is nothing less than experiencing hell for the hard work put up here to earn foriegh currency for the country.

So all the leaders to press for declaring the above airpot with proper run way and landing facility so that other private or international carriers can operate and Gulf passengers will come home comfortably.

By the way, the minister has only announced that the terminal will be built. He has not specified the date. So, this will take at least nest 10 years.

It will be quite interesting to read Moily's next press release.

What the coastal people first want is the international status to Mangalore Airport. Rest all next Mr. Moily.

This exercise will only over burden the already cash strapped AAI. What do they want to export? Fish n betel nuts, well by sea the charges are much less and refrigerated containers solve problems for perishables at cheaper rates. What to import? With Mumbai cargo just a few hundred kilometers away, there is absolutely no need for cargo to be established at VOML.
What has happened to Mysore airport? crores spent and not a single operation a day. Not to speak of money spent on maintaining the airport and its category. All these people shud be retired...

Fast Developing Managlore City needs Air Cargo felicity for EXIM purpose their by creating employment and foreign exchange especially from perishable food products which also needs industrial cold storage.

On the other hand RUNWAY development(enlargement) remained in paper only, I guess, and full pledged International Airport tag still remains a dream. Therefore, with Air cargo terminal the other unfinished task should be given importance including permission for international Airlines etc etc.In this context our state's minister in Centre need to make an effort to bring about MANGALORE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TRULY INTERNATIONAL.
