Beltangady: Aati Amavasye Tragedy - Two Drown in Gunderi River

Beltangady, Jul 19: Two young men drowned in Gunderi river, Perodittayakatte, in Tenkarandooru on Thursday July 19 at about 4 pm.

The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Pradeep, son of Anni Moolya, a resident of Karambar village, and 27-year-old Vinaya Kumar Shetty, a resident of Berkala, near Punjalkatte. 

Both Pradeep and Vinay Kumar were bathing in the rivulet after visiting Karinja temple on the occasion of ‘Aati Amavasye’.

Pradeep, Vinaya Kumar, and their friends Poornaksha, who is working in Padmasri electronics shop, Guruvayanakere, and Pradeep from Venoor, went to offer prayers at Karinja temple on the auspicious occasion of Aati Amavasye. After their prayers and having the concoction of the bark, they ventured into the rivulet near Gilikapu dam in Gunderi. 

Among the four youth, only Pradeep from Venoor and Poornaksha knew swimming.  When they saw that Pradeep from Karambar and Vinay were washed away by the undercurrent, they tried in vain to rescue them.

The police and the fire brigade were informed and local swimmers Iqbal, Vittal, Nissar, Ramesh, and Annu Moolya managed to retrieve their dead bodies.

Venoor sub-inspector Umesh Uppalige arrived at the location. TP member Dharnappa Poojary, Balanja gram panchayat member P K Chandrashekar, and Sharief were also present.

Venoor police registered a case in this regard.

    May the soul of the deceased rest in eternal peace and give comfort to the bereaved family. This is not the right time to venture to the sea or river whether for pleasure or religious purpose.
