Mangalore: RTO to Introduce Speed Governors, Computerized Bus Tickets

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (VM)

Mangalore, Jul 21: "Speed governors will be introduced in commercial vehicles like buses and lorries from December," said regional transport officer C Mallikarjuna at the RTO Adalat here on Friday July 20.

He was replying to queries and grievances raised by the public regarding speed limits in buses and lorries.

Screeching Horns

"Cases are being filed by the RTO against buses that use harsh, loud, multi-toned and pressured horns. Use of single-toned horns will bring a permanent solution the problem, and the same is been discussed with bus owners. Bus owners have already discussed it with manufacturing companies and within 15 days representatives will be called. Prior to this a meeting will be held with bus owners to discuss on use of limited decibel horns," he said.

Computerized Tickets

RTO has been receiving complaints regarding misuse of tickets in buses. For this reason, RTO has advised buses to issue computerized tickets. Discount for senior citizens will be discussed during RTO general meeting to be held on August 28.

Permission to KSRTC buses

The city is growing and more number of buses are needed along with KSRTC buses, said Hanumanth Kamath, president of Nagarika Hitarakshana Vedike.

In reply, the RTO officials said that as per the DM notification of 1992, KSRTC buses do not have permit to enter State Bank, but permission will be granted for buses to run at Kankanady and other places. "More number of buses will run in places like Eliyar Padavu and Ablamogeru and measures will be taken to mention final destination place of buses departing from Hampankatta," they said, adding that discussions will be held with KSRTC officials regarding more buses to rural areas.

Arrangements will be made by the RTO to display phone numbers of RTO and traffic police on buses so that the people could report rash driving and indiscriminate honking.

Strict actions will be taken on vehicles carrying more children than their capacity said, Mallikarjuna.

In response to complaints about auto fares, he said that information on fixed auto fares will be provided to public by installing boards near auto stands.

Topics like front door entry in buses only to women, training to drivers and conductors, removal of music systems in buses, solution to traffic blocks near Kottara and Kodikal and other topics were discussed.

K Rajavarma Ballal of Canara bus owner’s association, Jayaram Shek, from Dakshina Kanada bus owner’s association, Vishnumoothi from auto owners association, Prakash VN, Shekar Deralakatte among others were present.

This has been discussed at several RTO Adalats and so far the RTO & the Traffic Ploice Dpt have not been able to control the bus operators who are not only opposing the installation of speed goevrnors but also opposing the introduction of the KSRTC busses inside the city limits in Mangalore. Why can't the rules be amended to allow the KSRTC busses to ply on the city routes? Don't Mangloreans deserve the comfort of travelling in good buses instead of the uncomfortable city buses whose operators do not care for the comfort of the passengers and are very unsafe for the elderly, women and children.

Thier only motive is to maximise their profits. It is high time that the authorities take serious note of these issues and take concrete steps to change the status quo and implement the positive changes including allowing the KSRTC busses to ply along city routes, installing the speed governors and removing the harsh pressure horns from these busses.

Ladies should first occupy seats meant for ladies and should sit on other seats only when ladies seats are occupied. These days ladies are sitting on other seats leaving ladies seats vacant and as men are not permitted to sit on ladies seats they have to travel standing. Passengers should vacate seats meant for Senior citizens when elderly people are around. Unfortunately many people dont even know which seats are reserved for Senior citizens.

one most important step needed is "LADIES SPECIAL" busses . this is very much needed in the morning an evening hours. i have seen school/college girls struggle to get in and they are taken advantage physically. these busses must have lady ticket collector. i don't understand why women/women organizations fight for this which is their right. i hope this will be introduced and some good hearted bus owners come forward to the women of our society.

This topic had been discussed several times nothing has yeilded yet. However let us hope for the best.Senior citizen's find very difficult to travel in the city buses at the present situation, due to the over load, speed and negligence of the conductor/ driver.Compettition among the buses makes the risk of life of the comuters. During the school timings additional buses must ply in order to reach the students in time to their school/colleges.When the senior citzens/old aged person, or sick person gets down of the bus bus conductor/driver should take more precaution. some time we notice conductor is insisting the pessengers to get down without complete stop.It would be better, in between the city buses KSRTC must introduce their buses so that senior citizes can travel more comfortably and confidence. Present situation travelling in our city buses is the they are moving towards the gate of the cemitary. Let us hope something better improvement and let us hope the we are returning our home safely.
